Can I restrict access to a chapter in a book by password or completion of another activity?

Can I restrict access to a chapter in a book by password or completion of another activity?

Hi there,

I'd like to have a chapter of a book with answers to hard copy activities or exemplar essay answers. I'd like to be able to set a password for access to a particular chapter, but I can't see any way of doing it. Another use might eb to automatically show the chapter after the completion of an essay question so that students could compare their answer to an exemplar.

Is there any way to do this, or do I need to put in a request somewhere for a possible future development?

Thanks

No. The book's access restrictions apply to the whole book. Each chapter can be manually, individually hidden, but that applies to all  students equally.

One alternative is to create a Page (resource) instead of a Chapter in a Book. Each Page can have its own access restrictions.

However, you might find a Quiz even more useful, because you give different feedback to students who need/merit it. Add a question to make a place to record marks when you grade their hard-copy work. (Use manual grading.) Put your specimen answers and supplementary information in the Feedback area...

Thanks for the response.

I use the quizzes quite a lot, so I understand what you mean. I put them in an orphaned section of the course and then link to the quiz from within the lesson or book that I am using.

You make a very good point with putting sample answers in the feedback section. I could make the quiz as a learning experience rather than a graded activity just to show the answers in the feedback, then restrict access to that particular quiz dependent on completion of another activity or only available to a particular group.

Thanks again. Although it wasn't the answer I was initially looking for, it's still helped me solve the problem.

I have developed a patched version of the Moodle book that allows the use of Page activities to be used as chapters in books.  This allows us to use the access restriction controls on these chapters.  If you are interested, watch and comment on https://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-54933 and let me know if this is an idea that should be fleshed out completely.
