The second winner of a T-Shirt with their own design is Antonio Vicent! As of right now his design had 25 votes - if you voted for it feel free to now go and change your vote for something else to help us choose winner #3.  Hurry, you have only two days left!

Antonio came up with the great idea of a Mosiac made of all the user pictures from moodle.org, forming the Moodle logo.  A variety of Moosaic-based stuff will be available from the Moodle shop soon!

This t-shirt can't be sold in the shop. It is one big illegal tshirt. It uses multiple copyrighted graphics without permission of the owners, and it uses people's personal images without their permission. In fact, in looking closely, I discovered that my ibis icon that I use here on Moodle was pilfered for this tshirt without my permission. In short, this tshirt is a gross example that one would not want to set for students-one of theft without permission and trampling of intellectual property rights. Don't believe me? Then read the CafePress policy. And it's not just their policy, it's the law.

Um, OK, that's one way of looking at it (a particularly sour and negative way, I must say).

I'd already planned to remove commercial logos from the pool, but I'm very happy to take your image out also, and those of anyone else who feels the need to take offense at what is obviously a completely harmless use of profile images. On a T-shirt the individual faces will hardly be recognisable and are actually not important to the overall effect.

I haven't looked as closely at it myself yet to see if my moodle image is in there but I would be honored if my avatar image could be included.

In fact, perhaps people could pay a few quid to get their image definitely included?

大笑 Not a bad idea. 大笑

The thing I liked about this way of making art is that the software chooses images from everyone on a fair, random and technical basis. I don't think I'm in there either, for example.

I was a little bummed out I couldn't make out my picture... sad

Feel free to use it as needed in this t-shirt design... I have never been famous.

The thought crossed my mind of coming up with an icon that so fitted part of the picture that the software would have to choose it, if Antonio ran it again.

I don't mind being included in this mosaic. A paying thing might be a good idea, or even a 'donate to moodle, get in the mosaic' type of thing. A few weeks ago the Content MS drupal was in trouble and asked for donations so they could buy a server of their own (they needed $3k and got $10k plus a Sun server!), afterwards they made a poster with all the donator's names, similar to the Firefox NYT full page add, and though this poster wasn't really published or anything, I was so proud to see my name in there! This could be similar....

Whilst taking N Hansen's point (and I believe it is valid) I too would be honoured to have my avatar featured (I don't have one in this list 伤心 ) and I thought it was agreat idea to make a school t-shirt in the past (everyone'd want to buy one if their photo was on it, but have never found somewhere to print 'em for me.  In the UK we have to have policies in school that mean before we can take a child's photo they need parental permission., Perhaps we need something the same if we agree to have a picture in this t-shirt design.  I'll upload a new (copyright free) avatar and PLEASE count me in (if I can be included).  Because I think it is a GREAT design that summarises the COLLABORATIVE nature of MOODLE more than any words could.

Well, actually, my reaction was the same as Darren's. It crossed my mind to complain because my avatar was NOT included smile.

While I think N Hansen has a point, why use something that you feel so strongly is private property in a public forum such as this?  Me, I'd be honoured if my avatar was used in connection with this great constructivist tool and the community that has grown up around, and in support of, Moodle.  I don't think the local cartoonist (who drew my avatar) who had a tablet PC thrust under his nose with a request "Draw me in 5 seconds"  would mind either (he didn't sign it I notice, but I'll buy him a beer).

In fact, with tongue in cheek I was musing about the forthcoming MoodleMoot in Oxford - for easy recognition, wouldn't it be an idea to have conference badges with the avatars on them so that they appeal to visual memory as well as textual?  Or would it run foul of copyrighting sensitivities?  Never mind then, I'll just do one for me.

Copyleft rocks.

I'd be happy to pay a modest sum to have my gorgeous avatar face included in the design. I'd prefer it was a little larger than in that design of course 微笑

Copyright aside, it is illegal to use someone's likeness commercially without their express permission. Just because someone uses an image to identify themselves on Moodle doesn't mean they still don't retain control over how that image might otherwise be used. It's not a matter if you don't want someone using it keep it private. Sure that way no one will be able to take it. But the principle of the matter is that it is illegal. Did you hear about the legal case against Taster's Choice a couple months ago? That man was awarded 15 and a half million dollars by the jury for their use of his picture without having paid him the agreed upon amount 20 years ago. He had no idea all those years his picture had been used on the coffee jars until a woman in the supermarket pointed it out to him.

I have a Moodle site that is not associated with any accredited degree granting institution and therefore anything I post on my own site doesn't fall under educational fair use so I am acutely aware of the limitations on my use of copyrighted material on my site. I will go the extra effort myself to not use the work of others without permission or work that is under copyright. It would be a lot easier for me to just ignore the laws and since my courses will not be freely accessible I probably could get away with it, but how can I really expect others to refrain from taking my material if I were to take the work of others myself?

Whether you agree entirely with the laws is one matter, but the truth is that is what we have to work with and if we don't set the example of working within the laws then we will have no leg to stand on if others violate our rights.

I don't have any beef with Moodle specifically, but I have principles that I believe in no matter the situation.

I assume you are talking about US laws here?

A disclaimer would do it here (and prob in australia where I assume the moodle.org server is) stating that any image used on or submitted to the moodle.org server must not infringe upon any Australian copyright laws and may be used freely to promote moodle in any capacity.

It's not a difficult problem to solve 眨眼

I do understand about the copyright issues, and if we were talking about taking one picture of someone and using it as a key part of a new logo or something then I would totally agree. In this case individual images are actually not important to the design or really recognisable unless you are really hunting for something in particular, so I don't think it can be compared to the examples you've brought up.

Anyhow, I've set up a choice activity now for people to opt-out if they want.

I hope the "outstanding" cow picture and slogan is OK to use because I'm making a T-shirt out of that too.   微笑

Martin, perhaps a release statement could be requested for any profile image used on moodle.org.  "Creative commons type?"

Anyway, I release my ugly mug for anyone's else's coffee mug.

Same big trouble for me, although I'm too shortsighted to have verified if mine is there or not, I believe that Sean Connery has no clue of what Moodle is...

I think however that the very best would be that the avatars of all the users... it would probably make them unrecognisable on a T-shirt but it would give a far more "inclusive" meaning to the image: "Moodle are us!" rather than "Here you have a sample of Moodle users"...

It would be possible to fit all the non-logo images in a square of about 70x70, but the problem is that they don't all have the right colors to be part of a Moodle logo (many are very green, for example).

The problem with getting donations for this is that it's an administrative nightmare. I have no time to keep track of anything like this. but don't let that stop you putting in donations眨眼

I have set up a choice activity for people to indicate their preference - please advertise it around so the people who don't read these forums aren't too disadvantaged.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is that some of the images are themselves stolen, so the user has no legal right to release them.

I can see Charlie Brown and Spongebob Squarepants in the mosaic, and there are probably one or two others in there which aren't the property of the respective moodler. Those should definitely be removed.
