Hi,

stumbled across this:

Canny marketing eh-foregrounds the one of many users.  Got me thinking about something Dan P once stated in a forum.....we know those who use Moodle are hooked on its amazing features/functionality etc....but it is those who are new to moodle who we would like to see at moots etc.

Just a thought or two from someone new to moodle.

mmmm This, I suggest is an inhouse video that escaped into the wild... because if you ever used Blackboard, you would know that if you ask it do do things... it doesn't. 

We dumped Blackboard as it just could not handle what was asked of it, too limited, too expensive. Admittedly, what they replaced it with is as bad, if not worse, but it suits the people who make the decisions.. if not the people who use the tool. Hopefully someone is going to wake up soon, and I expect will make the same stupid decisions over that led to Blackboard and its replacement all over again.

thanks for your response.  It appears we may not be on the same page here, so I will elaborate, sorry about that. I am not going to spell out the affordances of one LMS over another here, we have enough threads in this forum that do so.

Now, what were my take aways from that clip?

I am a teacher surfing the net to find out about an LMS....got a bit of cash in the pot put aside for ICT development across my institution-we are pretending Colin OK غمزة

Right, so my take away involves three things...and some more things (edit!)...

1. the learner could explain the purpose behind the features and functionality of the LMS she engages with, for her learning development

2. the learner was tiptop coherent with regards to the related language

3. the learner expressed motivation for her engagement

4. the learner was tickled pink about the M-learning affordance

5. the learner will chat with her peers about her knowledge of the LMS she uses for learning about stuff-she can interact with, by just login-in she can even edit stuff! 

6. this is not about asking an LMS to do stuff-nice concept Colin....but an LMS has tin ears ابتسامة كبير

7. tis is about how a product is presented, albeit in the form of escaping into the wild/OR within a dev forum-and I say that with the utmost respect...if BB have not put this together....user (teacher and learner endorsement- off their own-back....well does it get any better than that!

8. yes a focus on admins, devs and what not is so important as is a focus on teachers' needs

9. My bet...and I will bet you an ice-cream with all the trimmings- is that the likes of canvas, Bb, and other products have now switched their telescopic lens onto 'learning' the user as learner....that is the starter for ten Colin

10. How that connects seamlessly across admins, devs and teachers is essential across the world of LMSs  for online/blended L&T

Finally, that learner was aged 6/7! The next generation Colin....they know far more than we credit them for-the next LMs builders eh! مبسوط

Gee Dawn, can you be a little more patronising? I just live for it.... مهرج

I would then put to you that we leave behind those things we used as children... or rather we should. My complaint about Blackboard was not its ability to do things, it did lots of things, but it was its inability to do things when I wanted it to. Its inflexibility, its constant sonambulism at moments of high stress..agh.. a dead horse and my arm is tired.  

Any carefully prompted 6 year old can do this, particularly one that is, I suspect, of a little more than average ability. Also, at that age, kids really want to be helpful, be seen as being a "good" child. A few well chosen words would make her enthusiastic enough to salivate when the whistle is blown. Does not mean much I am afraid. 

So do not over analyse things, do not read too much into them. 

However, having said that, your point about not concentrating on the needs of the teacher, the learning need, is well taken, but you will have to take it up with others, I am not a Dev and have little input into future directions. Besides, I am just a teacher, so who listens anyway? قبلة

You might want to look at Stephen Heppel's blog, or Ken Robinson's videos on YouTube, interesting

Now I got it! Thanks for the explanation: This is not about real 6 year olds. They hopefully have the luxury of the real world. This is about 60 year olds, freshly graduated to the virtual world and behaving virtually like 6 year olds.

Obviously they need some schooling!

As an addition to my post above, and an aside but really off topic... I heard today that the people who have made the decision about BB's replacement have decided that what was adopted is not "the be-all and end all" and have already determined to move away from it. Unfortunately, as predicted, all they are doing is just more of the same... another whiz-bang-one-size-fits-all-tool that will be all things to all people.... How predictable...
