How long does it take to customize a Moodle theme?

How long does it take to customize a Moodle theme?

I have a site that's been running for several years with version 1.9.  It's time for an upgrade!

After I upgrade to 2.7, approximately how long would it take to customize?  A few months?  I'll be starting with a premium theme.  I know this is a question that could receive a broad range of answers, so feel free to be conservative.

Thanks,
Prashad

What do you call "a premium theme"?

Joseph

PS.- To moderator, this discussion should probably be moved to the Theme forum.

I don't know much about themes -but in common parlance I'd have thought a premium theme was one you have paid for, yes? is this a premium 1.9 theme which you need to customise to work with 2+ or are you starting making a premium theme for your upgraded Moodle site? It would help the themers who contribute here if you can give details of which theme  you are dealing with. Also - the answer is likely to be (as we say in English) "how long is a piece of string" smile It could take anything between a  few hours if you do it non-stop and are a themes expert, or months if you do it every now and then and are not familiar with theme changes between 1.9 and 2+

As Mary says, "how long is a piece of string", but... from experience, here are some values when you know what you are doing:

  1. Clone the Clean theme to start making a new one: 1 hour or so.
  2. Customise from point 1, to have changed colours, added the odd setting and logo: half a day.
  3. Customise an existing theme to your requirements (depending on the requirements, such as transposing functionality from other themes), say around fifteen changes: two days.
  4. Create a new theme from scratch and add lots of new wizzy functionality, i.e. my Shoehorn theme: six weeks and counting.
  5. Maintain an existing theme with changes to core API: around two days per Moodle release if done incrementally.
  6. Maintain an existing contributed theme that everybody uses, i.e. Essential: one to three days a week.

I hope this helps.

If you want to brand you platform, I would use the essential theme. It's a free plugin that I used to completely brand our Moodle site. It took me about 2 hours to transform the whole site. And it looks really professional with media spots and a slideshow. I found it easy to use and my boss loves it.

I would highly recommend it.

Following on from what Gareth says, it depends on where you are starting from, and where you want to take it.

Two minutes if it is just making a few alterations to the style sheet, or forever if you are constantly looking to improve the look and feel of your Moodle site.

Cheers

Mary

As I understand 2.7 (Clean & More), More offers a little more.  So, what I did was I started with MORE, then began customizing it based upon my own visual desires.  Actually, I have a second "experimental" moodle installation where I practice things before implementing them on my "production" moodle system.

The same is true about other non-theme customization in Moodle.  Try making changes to an experimental moodle first, see that the change does, then implement what you like on your production moodle.

I have been customizing my Moodle for over 6 years.  I don't ever plan to be done.  Mary Evans' post is correct.
