I've hit a brick wall in this. So I added a tracker item:
Add Course size, Backup size and Private files size reports

Other random information:
At present there are several different file storage types:
- Moodle's files
- Private files (not sure where these are stored)
- Personal Backup files. (Like if you do a backup of a course in your private area)
- Moodle backup files (stored in the folder you specify)
You can experience a sudden blowout in disk space and have no idea where the space is going.
You can look in your backup folder and get an idea of course sizes.
Or maybe you just don't worry, since disk space is a lot more cheap these days??

I'd really like to see some reporting on this in core Moodle.
