With the improved Conditional activities settings in Moodle 2.7, it's possible to hide an item - and then reveal it - and then hide it again, a feature very useful in the popular gamification type courses. Here's a Pirates Quest module. You can see that they must first pass Skill set 1 before being able to access Skill set 2 and so on:


 When they get the required grade in the first quiz, a congratulatory label appears, telling them they have achieved level 1 Piracy and that they can now access quiz 2. So far, so good:


 But what happens when they get the required grade in Skill set 2? The level 1 label disappears - and is replaced by a Level 2 label (And so on....)


 How to do this?
  •  Set the activity completion for Skill set 1 quiz to "Require grade" 
  • Set the Restrict access for the Level 1 label as in the screenshot below: 

What will happen is that the Level 1 label will appear once the student pirate has got over 50% in the first quiz. It will stay visible until they have completed the second quiz (Skill set 2) at which point it will disappear. 

 The Level 2 label will appear once the student pirate has got over 50% in the second quiz. It will stay visible until they have completed the third quiz (Skill set 3) at which point it will disappear. And so on and so on....

Moodle 2.7 makes this a whole lot easier! I saw a demo of conditional activities a few years back from Sarah Thorneycroft's Moodle Dailies and was excited by the potential.

The 'twitter' course has been set up as a demo but the framework can be applied to any content.

I have been wondering how can we use Moodle to set up 'lives' that can be lost ( a sub category in the gradebook?), and what behaviours could be logged and calculated as penalties? Any ideas?

The only problem I find with this set up is that if you make an assignment something that goes invisible after a time, it gets removed from the gradebook!

I really wish there was a way to have something in the gradebook, but invisible on the course.

Hi Phil,

Would it help you to put the assignment in the orphaned area of the main course page and add a link to the assignment in the topic area? You could then make the link invisible in the topic area, but still keep the grade for the assignment.

You can add items to the gradebook directly. There are some good instructions here:

https://teaching.unsw.edu.au/moodle-gradebook-customise#grade_item. In summary...

  1. In the Gradebook, select Simple view.
  2. On the Simple view page, scroll to the bottom of the page and click Add grade item.
