Hi, we have Moodle 2.1.1 in our organization, the login, access and navigation to different pages is quite fine for normal users but for Admin accounts it is just really slow. The thing is when I login as admin, it just loads for few minutes and eventually times out. I had to stop loading and refresh the page, then it displays the home page. Once logged in navigation to pages is normal but once logging out and if i had to log back in I had to do the same things again. Similarly it happens if i click on the "Notifications" section, it just loads for few minutes and times out.

I have read many posts like this from many Moodle users but none of them mentioned a concrete solution to this.

I have made some configuration changes as mentioned in this article http://opensourceelearning.blogspot.com.au/2012/10/why-your-moodle-site-is-slow-five.html but it didn't make any difference at all. One thing to mention is the size of the mdl_log file is 420 MB and the performance issue is due to that? If so is it ok to just delete the entries that are old and keep just 1 week or 1 month worth of logs?

Can anyone suggest things to resolve this issue. Any help would be much appreciated.

Upgrade to a more recent version of Moodle. It will be faster, more secure, and less buggy.

Regarding the speed, I'm not sure I would actually agree. When I upgraded to version 2.5 I had exactly that same problem, having the system run very slowly when using the admin account. In my case the solution was to work on the settings of the server components:

The latest version of Moodle is 2.7.

The key change I am thinking of (MDL-41811) actually landed in Moodle 2.6. That made things a lot faster for admins.

But, in general, 2.6 was a bit faster than 2.5, which was a bit faster than 2.4 in our testing.

Yes, I knew about the recent release, though I haven't installed it yet (nor version 2.6), however, knowing how Moodle gets more resource intensive with each new version... Ok, thanks for your comment, it'll be interesting to see how version 2.7 works in my computer.

Thanks for the response Tim. But it's quite weird that once logged in as admin navigating to different pages is quite fine. The only instance the issue occurs is when logging in. When I login as admin i never logged in successfully without stopping and reloading the page. It always loads for a while and times out if I didn't stop loading the page and refresh.

We can upgrade to a newer version but it would be good to find out what caused this.
