Moodle tip: 3 teacher time-savers that admins can enable

If you are a regular teacher using Moodle alongside all your other tasks, the last thing you want to do is have to keep clicking, typing and scrolling more than you absolutely have to. So here are three simple time-savers which your friendly admin can set up for you:

1. Drop your descriptions:

Activity descriptions are often useful and sometimes essential. But imagine you upload a presentation sensibly named 'Presentation from Lecture April 1'. Are you one of those teachers I've seen who then copy that title and paste it into the description because it's required? You don't have to. Ask your admin kindly to turn off required descriptions from Site administration>Plugins>Activity modules>(name of activity) See for example  File resource settings and also Folder resource settings.

Required description

2. Freeze your students:

Moodle's gradebook can be quite cumbersome, especially if you have many assignments. Admins can set the student column to be static from Site administration>Grades>Report settings>Grader report  so that when you scroll across, you still see who did what. A small feature that can make a big difference. See Grader report settings.

3. Plan your posts:

Forward planning allows for better work-life balances. If you use your course news forum for regular announcements, you can schedule posts to display on certain dates. Your friendly admin can enable timed posts in Site administration>Plugins>Activity modules> Forum It's an experimental setting but I haven't heard of it exploding on anyone yet. See Forum settings

Hi Mary,

RE: 2.

I thought the screenreader option had gone where it says in the docs '(Note that this feature is not available for users who have have the screenreader setting in their profile set to Yes.)'?

Cheers,

Gareth

I have the same problem with Gareth.

I set the Static, but nothing changed.

I don't know where to check the screenreader option.

The No.2 is an always asked feature by our staff. I was so excited to announce it to my site users, but feel frustrated now.

Anyone knows this feature is still valid in Moodle? (I have tested this on Moodle2.6.1 and 2.6.2, Moodle2.5 and Moodle2.4, none is working)

Hi William,

Yes, No. 2 works in Moodle 2.6. It is located at Administration > Site Administration > Grades > Report Settings > Grader Report  > Static Students Column. Quick and easy way to get to is is just search for static in the Administration search box.

Thanks to Gareth - I've removed the screenreader reference from the docs. Reading through this thread I'm wondering if the static students' column is being temperamental or if it's theme related?

Hi Mary,

Since you asked!I

am on 2.1, using the theme "Formal White."

I can change the "static students" setting, but it does not make the column static, Yes I have toggled the setting to see if that helps, but no.

I do not see it as a major issue, and hope to upgrade over the summer.

Thank you AL, I followed your guide and tested on my Moodle2.6.1 & 2, Moodle2.5, Moodle2.4, Theme are Clean and AARDVARK.

No Static column appears when grading an assignment.

Must be something else has to enable, please advice.

Hi William,

Sorry I've been out of the loop a few days. The only things I can think to suggest right now is to try a different theme, clear your browser cache, or purge your Moodle caches.

LAE Grader Report, an alternative to Grader report scrolls vertically and horizontally without losing view of the student columns or the grade item header rows.

Dear everyone,

Sorry, I was looking at the wrong page. The 'Grade' page is not Static, but the 'Grader report' page works as what the Static means.

Nothing wrong about version or theme, work well on anywhere, Sorry about my confusion.

Of course, it will be good the Static can apply to the 'Grade' page as well.

Number 1 is a great and simple tip. Thank you very much.

In order to find all the descriptions I put "requiremodintro" into the admin search box.
