Hi Stuart,

Thanks for sharing and for putting all this time and effort into this project. It's greatly appreciated.

I found the list of podcasts here: http://www.freemoodle.org/mod/pcast/view.php?id=14193&mode=2 and they all seem to be in M4A format only, which isn't compatible with all operating systems and devices. Would it be possible to also offer the podcast in MP3 format so that it's easily accessible to everyone?

BTW, I tried simply changing the file extension from .m4a to .mp3 but that seems to be problematic with some media players and browsers (I think it's encoded using the AAC CODEC). The only reason to use the M4A container is if the audio is encoded using AAC or Apple's ALAC CODEC's. The bitrate of the podcasts on your site is 128 Kbps which will sound better in MP3 than in M4A (AAC). AAC only has the advantage over MP3 at very low bitrates, i.e. under 48 Kbps.

In the words of this sound engineer, who did a detailed analysis, "The big standout to me is how much he waveform has been altered on the iTunes M4A version. And how bad it sounds." Source: http://www.computeraudiophile.com/blogs/mitchco/flac-vs-wav-vs-mp3-vs-m4a-experiment-94/

It'd be nice to have a widely supported alternative format like MP3.

Hi Matt

For the first year we figured we would concentrate on mastering the technology and process to just produce a solid quality podcast. We're having to review the 'Enhanced podcast' format, as it looks like Apple are dropping support for this.  We use Skype to record the interview, Audacity to edit and do some post-production, and GarageBand to construct the (enhanced) podcast.  We've just got Jane and Teresa some studio quality microphones and headphones too.

We're also using the Pcast Moodle plugin to publish the podcast.
This has been challenging at times, but we wanted to do this, so we can pass on this knowledge to other teachers at some point.
Stephen Bourget, developer of this plugin, has been sooooo helpful, and we've managed to highlight / test / improve a few things in the module χαμόγελο

At this stage we just need the podcast "to work", try and be efficient in our production, and make sure it goes through iTunes OK, because that saves us money on promoting - hopefully most people who enjoy podcasts can access using iTunes, even if it's not their preferred method or format.

I'm all for open standards (of course I am!) so if we move away from the enhanced format then we can probably go to mp3 format instead, if iTunes will handle that for us χαμόγελο

We've just published the August episode of The Free Moodle Podcast on iTunes.

This month is a Moodle Moot special - with comments and interviews with attendees at conferences in Australia and the USA.  If you've never been to a Moodle Moot before it might be worth listening to get an idea of what people say when they attend ?

If you missed the June and July episodes they were a special review of Moodle 2.7 and how it affects Teachers, and Administrators.

Next month we have an in-depth interview with the creator of PoodLL !
