Restoring 1.9 courses to 2.5

Hi

We currently have a moodle 1.9 install which is being used across our school. I have a new 2.5 installation that we are setting up to migrate across to. My question is do the courses migrate well? I am trying to backup from 1.9 and restore to 2.5 but on one of my courses the assignments that show it 1.9 have restored as database activities in 2.5? Does anyone know what causes this and how i can prevent it changing from an assignment to a database.

On another course restore the assignments just do not come across at all.

They show up as assignments 2.2 in the restore process.

Thanks

Tom

Hi Tom,

To be able to restore assignments from your 1.9 site into 2.5, you'll need to have both the old and the new assignment activity modules enabled in Administration > Site administration > Plugins > Activity modules > Manage activities. The old assignment module is called 'Assignment 2.2' and the new one is simply called 'Assignment'. You will then need to run the Assignment upgrade tool to convert all your old assignments into new ones.

Once all of your 1.9 courses are restored on your 2.5 site and all assignments are converted, you can then disable the Assignment 2.2.

Thanks Tom, I hope your migration to 2.5 goes smoothly. If you have chance, please post about how you get on.

I've added information on restoring course backups from Moodle 2.2 and older to the documentation Assignment upgrade tool, as no doubt you're not the only one to be asking about it!

I have just started using Moddle again after switching from 1.9 to 2.6. All of my courses were deleted, but I have backups for all. However, I simply cannot get old backups restored to courses. In the past, I simply went to the files in each course and selected restore, and, bingo, it was done.

I have gone through the Restore tools over and over to no avail. I have read all that is addressed in forums and documents on this issues, but nothing helps. I see all of my items listed as they should be during the restore process, yet when the course opens, all sections are totally blank. The is no vestige of files anywhere. I can't even find where the restored files are now residing. After 12 tries, I decided to simply cry for help. Help! Leecy

First, suggest posting your own and not changing subject line ... original posting issue is similar but for version 2.5.   2.5 is not 2.6.  There could be many factors as to why 1.9 -> 2.6 is not working for you.  Maybe the moderator can do this for you.

Welcome to the new .... and now some questions concerning your backups ... your 1.9 was what version of 1.9 - can be seen in the moodle.xml file of the unzipping of the backup zip file - the .xml file is text so open with NotePad or some text editor.   That will also show all files contained in the course - course_files folder.

If one cannot restore the .zip backup, then at least one still has the files associated with that course in course_files.

One can get an idea of what was contained in the 1.9 backup also by looking at moodle.xml (activities/blocks).  If there was an add-on mod or block in the 1.9 that doesn't exist in the 2.6 that could cause issues.

Check the moodledata folder for your 2.6 and look in temp/backup folder to see if there is a folder name that looks like: f7f5f22a0ce99641ec5ed0e38976fa9a

The extracted files are in there.   Also see if there is a .log file larger than 0 bytes.   That's a text file and might contain clues.

Some 1.9 backups do take some work to get them restored into 2.x.   So investigation is required.   Have to warn, that even after that, one might have to be happy with just being able to recover the files from the backup - ie, the course will have to be re-built.

'spirit of sharing', Ken
