Yup. The nice and cutesy forum editor  icons make me forget for a brief moment that I've lost about one month's worth of forum posts. Lost into the ether.

I'm preferring to look forward and not back Frankie. These things happen to even the most prepared sites. 伤心

Now awaiting a flood of Essential posts as people realise the forums are back online.

BRING IT ON! :D

Yes, well said, Julian. Still, I can't help knowing that there was a LOT of useful forum advice on a multitude of topics. This one is close to home. For the past two months, I have been working on a customised placement test using the Moodle quiz. A lot of customisation work that I did was a result of reading posts, contributing code and asking questions on the Theme and Quiz forums. Now it's mostly gone. GONE! *Sniff*. Ah such is life.

But if you subscribe to the forums, then you get eMail forum digests, so the posts between the backup and the breakage are still there, just a bit distributed and in an alternate format.

It's great to have the forums back, but has anybody else noticed that the email notifications are broken?  Most of them appear as just text (all links and formatting stripped out, so you can't even click through to read it properly), and some seem to be missing their actual message, too!

It may be you need to reset your profile how you want to get emails notifications. I only have mine as text and not html...so I have not seen anything different. Which makes me suspect that mine are set as the default. I may be wrong and it could be your mail server! 伤心

It's a weird hybrid.  The emails are definitely HTML - most of the message is indented, the horizontal rule above the footer is there, but the formatting and links are gone.  I also seem to have stopped getting emails again about 10 hours ago...

I don't think any changes have been made to our mail system recently enough for this to be a problem at my end (though it's certainly a possibility).  Emails from the Moodle Tracker are coming through fine (formatting and links intact), though, so chances that it's at my end seem slim.  I'll try resetting appropriate profile settings, but in the mean time, if anyone else can confirm whether or not they're seeing either of these issues, I'll log MDLSITE issues if it's not just me:

  1. Forum emails (not digests), although HTML, are missing formatting and links (probably images too, but it's hard to tell!)
  2. Forum emails seem to stop for a period of hours or days, then resume as if nothing happened.  I have not received any for about 10 hours, but I can see that there have been plenty of posts in forums I'm subscribed to during that time.

Further investigation revealed that the messages are being mangled in one of two ways, seemingly depending on which of two mail servers it's going through at my end.  I haven't made any progress on it with our IT support, so I've switched over to a Gmail account for the moment to see what happens.  So far, no sign of any forum notifications - so nothing to check... it seems that issue #2 above is indeed at the moodle.org end (Matteo has already reported it as MDLSITE-2625, so I won't report it again!).

I've now had confirmation that the first issue (mangled emails) is at my end - hopefully it'll be resolved soon, but in the mean time I've got moodle.org emails going through a Gmail account, which gets them to me in a readable state.  Some good progress seems to have been made on the second issue.  Hopefully it can be fully resolved too; if anyone wants more detail, check the comments in the tracker issue I mentioned in my last post.
