New iPad application for Moodle

Hello all, we are developing an application that allows you to deliver moodle courses on the iPad and at the same time present users with information about your courses, organization/company etc. The application is called TheLMSapp and it consists of two functional modules:

(1) TheLMSapp plugin, which is LMS specific, and is installed as a plugin in your moodle installation (moodle >2.2 supported) and

(2) TheLMSapp client application for tablet devices which will soon be available to download from the App Store.

Administrators install TheLMSapp plugin in order to make their moodle installation accessible from the client app. When the user opens the client application for the first time he/she can select in which of the available LMSs wants to connect. Upon successful connection the user can access all LMS functionality (courses, messages, calendar and so on) within TheLMSapp.

You can watch the slideshare presentation, the demo video or sign up to notify you when the beta version of the application will be released on the App Store and when you will be able to download the plugin and test it in your moodle installation.

Any thoughts or comments are more than welcome!

Antonis, this is great news! I've am developing an online art school, and have told my designers that I would like it to work w mobile devices. So this is really good news.

I watched your slideshare, and have a few questions for you:

1: Will the theme or other visual properties affect your app's effectiveness? Or will it work for all layouts/themes?

2: Will it work for Moodle 2.2 and newer versions?

3. Does the app require me to create the course in a particular way, in considerate of the app, in order to make use of its features/potential as listed on slides #14-15

Thanks again for creating this app. Moodle is getting better all the time. 微笑

hello Tim and thank you for your interest! Regarding your questions:

1) the theme that is used on the desktop version of moodle does not affect the app at all

2) moodle 2.2, 2.3 and 2.4 are currently supported

Hello all, TheLMSapp is now available on the App Store ( www.appstore.com/thelmsapp ), so you can now download it to your iPad.

You can register a (free) account within the app. There are currently two courses available: one introductory that will give you more info about the application and one course that will allow you to learn how to use Microsoft Word (HTML5 SCORM files).

If you take the take to download it let me know your thoughts and/or comments and if you would be interested to install TheLMSapp plugin to your moodle installation.

Hi Antonis,

Interesting stuff! 微笑

Does this mean that iPad users will be able to:

  • view legacy learning objects? e.g. Captivate and Articulate, among others.
  • view and edit MS Office, Open/Libre Office, and PDF documents?
  • view Flash video? e.g. embedded FlowPlayer (Moodle's default), and iframe embedded YouTube and Vimeo players

One advantage will be the ability to upload files which iOS blocks in its browser. Are there any other advantages to using the app instead of a web browser?

Hello Mat,

The iPad version of TheLMSapp currenlty supports HTML5 (SCORM compatible courses), videos in YouTube, Vimeo, .mp4 format or you can upload your files (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, Google docs, Slideshare presentations). All major authoring tools are supported. Whether you are using Adobe’s Captivate 6 or Articulate’s Storyline you can easily create a course and publish it to theLMSapp (or you can export again one of your old courses as HTML5 using a newer version of your authoring tool).

Since iOS does not provide access to the device's filesystem in case your users have to upload something you have to use some kind of workaround. You need to use either dropbox or google docs to upload your document/file and then submit the URL. We are working to provide additional solutions for this.

The main advantage of using an app like that is that it provides a unified environment from which you can access any moodle installation that has TheLMSapp plugin installed. We have developed TheLMSapp keeping in mind to simplify the UI by giving the user quick access to commonly used functions from a sliding side menu bar. Additionaly, since this is a native app, PUSH notifications are also supported and we are currenly working to integrate moodle messaging and notification system to send PUSH notifications to the end user.

Currently we have included an HTML5 course of MS word where it can give you an idea of the available functionality. Our next step is to open source TheLMSapp plugin so everyone can download it and install it to their moodle installation.

I will keep you posted on future development and I am very interested in your comments about the app.

Hi Antonis,

Thanks for the informative reply.

Re the file upload issue, perhaps looking at what the guys at Wordpress.org have done would help: http://wpiphone.wordpress.com/ But then I think Wordpress.org's file management system is better designed, although not for importing and exporting. Ah, pros and cons.

I also wonder if there's a generic app that would enable uploading to websites from iOS devices. Might not work with Moodle's file manager though. Mmm...

Hi Matt, we can allow users to upload photos (iOS allows access to the device's photo gallery) but uploading documents is a bit more compicated, I will keep you posted with our findings (or workarounds)!

Hi Samantha! Android support is coming soon! We primarily want to support 7'' and 10'' Android tablets. We began the development from iOS because many people asked us for an iPad version but we will definitely release an Android version as well, hopefully before June!

Re: New iPad application for Moodle

Cédric Mallet -

Hi Antonis

I've been looking for a product like theLMSapp for months now..

Does it also provide offline tracking for SCORM packages ? We use moodle with SCORM content built with Articulate, and our courses include quiz.  What we would need is a player that allow users to read the courses offline, and still deliver tracking. I don't know of any commercial or open source product that fits that need.

Thanks!

Hi Cédric,

Moodle Mobile will support IMS-CP, SCORM offline. It's in the roadmap, we are going to publish a survey in the following days so you can tell us your features priority.

Cheers, Juan

It depends on the results of the survey, in any case SCORM support is a big development that will take several months
