Bitnami Cloud Hosting w/AWS

After a month of playing with a demo site that I installed in one-click (Bitnami Moodle stack v2.4 Ubuntu 32-bit) I am about to recommend to my customer that we use this hosting option for their production site.

They are a very small organization, with a small number of courses and very limited resources.  They will be staring out with probaby less than 100 users (probably no more than 25 concurrent) but plan to grow of course.  I will be suggesting to them to set up 3 small sites; Demo, "Production for Schools" and "Production for Individuals" (individual courses will be purchased online using Paypal).

So far I have been able to do everything I need with no problems at all, using Filezilla to transfer and edit files.  I've installed plugins, setup repositories and fully customized the site to the customer's requirements. There will be no code customization.

My question is if there is anything important that I should be aware of or concerned about regarding the technical aspects or potential problems of this recommendation.  (security, interfaces, etc..)

I found a few discussions on the forum about specific problems, some rather old, regarding using this Bitnami config - but not very helpful.

I would really appreciate if anyone can contribute their experience with this or similar setup.  If anyone can comment on upgrading Moodle version and storage (using AWS) that would be a bonus.

Thanks,

Heidi

I am not familiar with BitNami, but I can offer some ideas for you.

1) Have you checked into how to upgrade Moodle, when necessary?

2) Can you SSH into BitNami?

3) What control panel, if any, do they offer?

4) Can you modify CRON?

5) How will you backup your installations?

Based upon your post, I think that you will probably say "yes" to these questions, but these are some things to think about.

Hi Rick

Thanks for responding.  In theory, they have a solution for all of the above - outlined here in the documentation;

http://wiki.bitnami.org/Applications/BitNami_Moodle#How_to_upgrade_Moodle.3f

Would still like to find someone who has done all this successfully -  in practice  smile

Looks like they have thought through Moodle and provided some scripts.  Make sure to try these.
