Hello.

Noticed a lot of people talking about skype so I downloaded it today. Very interesting. After making the test call I discovered my PC mike is terrible surprise

Any recommendations for a mike/headset to use with skype? Pref USB available online for the UK.

Thanks

Darren

It doesn't even have to be a great mike, just not something internal, as Skype itself is so good. I've got a very cheap mike we bought in Egypt for about 2 dollars.

Hi Nicole,
Thats interesting , try as I may , I can't get my mic to work with Skype ,sad (outgoing voice) works fine on all the windows tests and recording into other software , I can hear the echo 123 test from Skype, but not my own voice , of course no one else can 'hear me ' either . Bought a new mic even, to no avail.
Any ideas ?

Hello Joyce!

If you have headset with USB connection then go to Skype > Functions > Preferences > Sound Units and set sound in and sound out, so that it fits your headset. Remark, I have the Danish Skype, so I don't have the right menu names, so my advice should be understood with open ears. Hope it helps.

Joyce,

I haven't work with Skype in a while, but from my experience with other Voice-over-IP web conferencing systems, software-based firewalls particularly the "intrustion detectors" can cause real headaches getting something to work. If different microphones don't work, even traditional audio microphones, it's a deeper problem in your system.

Cheers,

Bob

Speaking of Skype, I just bought a "Skype In" phone number from them. The number I got 678-369-0656 is actually in the Atlanta exchange which is a few hundred miles away from where I actually am (in Florida). They have a limited supply of numbers, as they are in the beta stage, but if you wanted to you can have an exchange in a different country even. If someone in Europe or Australia wants a US phone number this might be the way to do it. They charge 3-4 Euros a month, that's all.

I recommend a headphone mike set. You can't use Skype through speakers sine the echo makes it painful for your listener. So you will be using a headset. If the mike is attached to the headset you can forget about it. It is a bit more expensive though.
I am in Japan so I got this

But you might consider these
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005UPCY
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005NRPC

The professional version of Pamela, the answerphone for Skype, will offer one touch call recording for 17.5 euros apparently. It will be out in June. Then I phone to be able to record calls for listening materials for language teaching.

The plantronics ones are very good.  Available as standard mini-jack plugs and USB.  Can be bought online almost everywhere.
