text to speech

hello everyone,

a few days ago I decidet to test text to speech (TTS) technology and I found it very useful.

The one, that I use is a free app for win:
http://www.aliensoftware.co.uk/Products/Speech/Download.asp

It lacks intonation and some pronuonciation, but I can understand, what it speaks laying in my bed with 37.5oC - I mean I was ill and was feeling not well sitting at computer, but I still had to get acquainted with some 20 pages of text ;).

There'is also opensource technology, based on java  http://freetts.sourceforge.net/ (I'd say for adwanced users as some config rithuals are needed ; )

In a few years, when such technology will become better, lectors might not need to waste their breath repeating the same to each class - just take a text file and on it goes sorriso. Of course You can always interupt, where You feel the need.

It sounds very much like Organik to me. We used Organik in our organisation for a while. It was based around communities and did indeed have discussion boards and also nominated experts who would answer questions. There was a rating mechanism and as questions were asked and answers given it would be stored in the knowledge base for future re-use. Another nice feature was that when anyone went into the system to ask a question - the expert would be notified via outlook. As an e-mail based culture this worked for our organisation. The software is still around and the company who own it are called Sopheon.

Thanks Jurgis.

I downloaded the software (free version), and I enjoyed playing around with funny voices, but I couldn't convert texts into the good quality voices of Jill and Tom. Sam, Marry, and Mike are OK.

I bought "Speechfy Solo" and I get those Jill and Tom voices all right. I'm planting those voice files into my Moodle courses and using them as voice course navigation as well as listening quizzes.

Mr Harashima,
Cool idea. How much is speechify solo? Can you post a sample voice? Does Speechify Solo produce mp3s? I would like to see your courses!

What an interesting thread. This has been at the back of my mind for a while. It would be great for kids who have reading difficulties.

I found some samples and their site but I couldn't find a software demo download or a price sad

Hi Tim,

Speechify Solo is integrated into the CALL system sold by Uchida Yoko in Japan. I talked them into selling this module separately to me. The asking price was 1,200 dollars, but I negotiated for a very good price, which I cannot say in public.

Speechfy solo does not produce .mp3 directly, but it produces good quality .wav, and .wma (windows media audio, which is smaller than .mp3 in file size). I attached here a sample .wav audio I use for my Moodle course navigation. Check it out!
