Hi,

LAMS looks very interesting. From what I can see it is a very promising tool for creating and delivering online e-learning content.

From the FAQ :

The LAMS software will be released as "open source software" (using the GPL) in late February 2005

Seems that the release has been delayed. Am I missing the download links?

I'm guessing that LAMS is using PHP and Flash looking at it's capabilities and the claim of the publicity that it was built to run on most servers and that users don't need to install any software to run the activities. I think php and Flash would be about the only way to achieve what they have done.

I'm interested in the possibility of getting this running from within Moodle.

Jamie

Hi Jamie,
We were expecting/hoping that LAMS would be (fully)
compliant with the IMS Learning Design specification
and therefore we are studying it in the LDBookStudy course.
However it seems as if it is rather 'inspired' by the
LD spec. We don't know exactly what that means yet.
They claim that they want to help develop the spec so
that the two will 'walk together' following a standard, but...
The source code has already been released but that only
may make sense to developers/programmers. What will
come on April 13 seems to be a downloadable authoring
tool/Player with documentation. The code has been thoroughly
rewritten. Is it interesting? Se the LAMS demo here.

Hi Anders,

LAMS has done quite a bit of work to address the compatibility with IMS LD. As a matter of fact extensive work has been done for the Oxford TIP Project (
http://users.ox.ac.uk/~jiscpub/JISC_TIP/Index.htm). Specifically on exporting LAMS Sequences to IMS LD Level A (
http://users.ox.ac.uk/~jiscpub/JISC_TIP/Index.htm#ld). In the word document there, you will see how the LAMS team has addressed the mappings between the LAMS LD schema and IMS LD. A functional implementation where authors in LAMS would be able to export their sequence as LAMS LD and IMS LD level A is going to be part of the LAMS 1.1 release.

The reason why LAMS originally developed its own LAMS LD schema was due to the lack of certain fundamental features that were required in LAMS (such groupings, lack of services and tools, etc) that are not present in the IMS LD spec. There is a very comprehensive explanation about this on paper: http://lamsfoundation.org/CD/html/resources/whitepapers/Dalziel.LAMS.doc

Nevertheless, the fact that LAMS is able to export sequences in IMS LD Level A might not necesarily mean that you automatically have interoperability with other IMS LD players. These issues still have to be address on the LD community.

A very interesting debate has started on the CETIS-ECSIG list. See http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/webadmin?A1=ind0504&L=cetis-ecsig under thread "UNFOLD COP meetings and online chat this week". There you will see some interesting postings regarding IMS LD level X interoperability and what it means in practical terms.

Hopefully this would provide a better understanding on LAMS and IMS LD compatibility. Although true that LAMS is "inspired" by IMS LD, given the Oxford TIP output where you can export sequences in IMS LD Level A, LAMS *is* as compliant as any other LD tool that provide the same level.

Thanks,

Ernie
