Importing in moodle 2.3.x is a pain

We are in the process of moving from 1.9.x to 2.3.x. What a pain THAT is, but that's not the topic I intend to cover here. tongueout

Instead, I am baffled by the new import function. Our teachers use the import feature HEAVILY to reuse material. However, when importing you no longer get the "deselect all" option, instead if you're importing from a course with hundreds of activities and you only want to import a couple, you need to deselect manually again and again. A needless pain which could be easily rectified by a simple "deselect all" option.

Furthermore, the fact that legacy files aren't imported is just baffling to me. We have teachers who have hundreds, or in the case of quiz banks, even thousands of images attached to questions or activities, that will not be imported.

These are the sort of issues that absolutely needs to get solved if more are to be pursuaded to move from 1.9 to 2.x. Infact, if I had known this in advance we probably wouldn't have bothered.

Rant over. If I've overlooked some simple solution, I would be very happy to know so. smile

Hi Kasper,

As you rightly point out, the import feature (and also course backup and restore) in Moodle 2 could really do with some UI improvements. The issue of needing a deselect all option has been reported in the tracker as MDL-25993. Please vote for the issue to indicate you'd like it fixed (tracker account required).

Regarding your legacy files problem, all files attached to questions or activities should be imported. If not, then it's a bug. I tried a quick search in the tracker and couldn't find a report of what you describe, so please feel free to create an issue, making sure you include steps explaining how to reproduce the problem so that developers can investigate it.

Thanks Helen. Just voted on MDL-25993 as you suggested.

I hope you are right about the quiz questions, as I haven't had the opportunity to test that yet. What I did notice was that links to images in the course layout were broken. Maybe I overinterpreted the problem mentioned here: http://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-25631
