I'm sure you'll be thanking your boss for this extra work soon.
Perhaps a good way ot get going would be to install Moodle on a web server and have a play around with it first. If you prefer you can download a version which will install easily on a Windows PC from here. If you have questions the chances are they have been asked before in these forums, of course you can post here too - there are lots of really helpfull people around.
The Exchange course on this site has some resources you can "restore" to your own Moodle site so that you can see some activities without creating your own.
