[Moodle 2.3] Missing topic/weekly outline and "show only topic x"

[Moodle 2.3] Missing topic/weekly outline and "show only topic x"

Hi,

we are using moodle 2.3 now and we are missing the topic or weekly outline at the top of the courses. It seems, that the css class defining the style of these outlines has changed.

In moodle 2.2.x the outline (h2 heading) has the class(es) "headingblock header outline", whereas in moodle 2.3 it is "accesshide" (see screenshots, red marker), that 'hides' this element.

Furthermore the "show only topic x" functionality seems to be missing in moodle 2.3, too (see screenshots, green marker).

Has this been removed on purpose?

It is a modified version of "formal_white".

I don't think either of  those is present in 2.3 -  certainly for the "show only one topic" you can choose in the course settings to have a one section per page option - see Course layout here http://docs.moodle.org/23/en/Course_settings

Is there a chance that the "Show only topic..." option will be returned?

I find it very helpful when designing courses and moving topics around.

I understand the "show only one topic" option, however, that is a teacher/facilitator option and not available for students to use.

Thank you!

I have tried to get HQ to keep the "Show only topic " in multi-sections display, to no avail. I still have it in my course format (not yet available for 2.3). 微笑

Perhaps you could help us understand your use case and why its not possible in 2.3 we can help solve it?

The 'show only topic' option confused a lot of people because it was so 'sticky'.

It's quite simple Dan. I often switch to all-sections display to see the "big picture". If I find a certain section that requires some work I zoom in to work on it. To be sure, I can zoom in from the navigation block or from the format navigation bar but it is much faster and more convenient to do that from the section itself (especially if the sections are in a hierarchy and the target section is in an inner level and not currently visible in the navigation). 微笑

You can click the section title to 'zoom' and 'Return to main course page' to zoom out?

I suppose I could. I need to see it to try it. Wouldn't be my design choice to make the section title a link in to the section, but that's me. Thanks. 微笑

My users and I like the drop down when the sections are collapsed for ease of use.

Additionally, it was really nice for participants who are visually overstimulated to collapse to just the one they wanted.

It's really nice to have it as a user option, not just the course option. I can see where the one page at a time would work, however, since it is a course setting it removes the flexibility for the users.

We noticed this having upgraded to 2.3.1 this afternoon - our plan is to mass change the setting for ALL courses in the database. I might even hack the Edit Settings form so the default is to have the show individual sections option the default.

EDIT - on v2.3.1, file /course/edit_form.php, here are my amended lines 127 and 128:

        //$mform->setDefault('coursedisplay', COURSE_DISPLAY_SINGLEPAGE); //new 2.3 default, show all sections on one page
        $mform->setDefault('coursedisplay', COURSE_DISPLAY_MULTIPAGE); //modded by DP - forces default to be show on multiple pages
(I kept the old line for safety)

I thought is was possible to define default values in config.php, based on explanations in config-dist.php :

//=========================================================================
// 9. FORCED SETTINGS
//=========================================================================
// It is possible to specify normal admin settings here, the point is that
// they can not be changed through the standard admin settings pages any more.
//
// Core settings are specified directly via assignment to $CFG variable.
// Example:
// $CFG->somecoresetting = 'value';
//
// Plugin settings have to be put into a special array.
// Example:
// $CFG->forced_plugin_settings = array('pluginname' => array('settingname' => 'value', 'secondsetting' => 'othervalue'),
// 'otherplugin' => array('mysetting' => 'myvalue', 'thesetting' => 'thevalue'));

But i'm not sure it allows this kind of settings to be forced...

I didn't look at the config option tbh, I just went straight for the form first. In the hope I didn't have to hunt around using the xref documentation.

There is Admin > Course > Course default settings which should allow you to set these defaults.

However it doesn't currently have an option for course display (oops, my fault) - please could create an issue for it?
