I'm having a hard time with MySQL and Unicode (details here http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=200610 and here http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=200291 ). In the process I referred the Moodle docs which wasn't really helpful.

1. Moodle databases should have been "migrated" to utf8 around versions 1.6 or 1.7. If that is right, out of the following four documents, only the first one has any relevance:
- http://docs.moodle.org/19/en/Unicode
- http://docs.moodle.org/20/en/Unicode
- http://docs.moodle.org/21/en/Unicode
- http://docs.moodle.org/22/en/Unicode

2. The first three of the above pages have the text "migrate your database" linked to http://docs.moodle.org/XX/en/Database_migration. But there is only one http://docs.moodle.org/19/en/Database_migration. In the last one, it is linked to http://docs.moodle.org/dev/Database_migration, which does not exist.

3. Same with the following four. If the conversion supposed to happen in 1.6/7 only the first one makes sense:
- http://docs.moodle.org/19/en/Converting_your_MySQL_database_to_UTF8
- http://docs.moodle.org/20/en/Converting_your_MySQL_database_to_UTF8
- http://docs.moodle.org/21/en/Converting_your_MySQL_database_to_UTF8
- http://docs.moodle.org/22/en/Converting_your_MySQL_database_to_UTF8

BTW, is this a _conversion_ or a _migration_? Because there is also http://docs.moodle.org/XX/en/Moodle_migration.

4. All the four in 1. have "Free On-line Unicode Character Map" linked to http://www2.physics.ox.ac.uk/research/atmospheric-oceanic-and-planetary-physics. I don't see the connection.

5. Same thing with the "Free offline java application" http://www.catalysoft.com/catalog/unicode-1-1.jar. ??

Two general questions:
- How does the wiki duplication really happen, automated? If so, is it too difficult to automate "link cleaning" too?

- In fact I have left comments in some talk pages. Are they being used? For example, out the pages:

* http://docs.moodle.org/20/en/Talk:Unicode
* http://docs.moodle.org/21/en/Talk:Unicode
* http://docs.moodle.org/22/en/Talk:Unicode
only the last one does exist. I believe, I've created it. But I can't create the other three. Why?

Edit: OK, got it. Because they are different wikis. But the tragic thing is, if log in anew, I'm logged out of the previous wiki!

Hi Visvanath,

Unfortunately I'm not knowledgeable enough about unicode to comment on your points, however I will try and find out more.

Regarding wiki duplication, a new version wiki is created by copying the latest stable version wiki, thus the 2.3 wiki will be created soon by copying the 2.2 wiki.

I don't understand your comment about being logged out of a previous wiki, as I'm frequently logged in to the 2.2, 2.1 and dev wikis simultaneously.

Hi Visvanath-I can't help your issue either, sorry, but I did want to second Helen's point about wikis - I  also can  be logged in to 2.2 and 2.1 at the same time ( and the French wiki too as a matter of fact) in the same browser, in different tabs.

It would have been nice 'course, if I could have solved those UTF issues with the help of wiki(s) without pestering the same person (see the two discussions I've linked in my previous post). It is too late anyway.

But how about the non-unicode questions, I mean the two general questions at the end of my previous post?

Expect my next "clarification" to grow by 25%!

I was perhaps confused by the four copies of the same article, with and without Talk pages. I rechecked: Yes, I can log into all four in the same browser session. Not that it is going to make a big difference, I'm out of this caucus race anyway. (I'll leave the Alice quote out this time 眨眼

One amazing thing about Alice is that there is so much to discover. Is it possible that Alice invented the caucus race? http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/caucus_race says, "(originally UK, idiomatic) A laborious but arbitrary and futile activity; an activity that amounts to running around in a circle, expending great energy but not accomplishing anything." but all the references are later than 1865 when Alice was written.

The conversion of Moodle to unicode was when going from 1.5 to 1.6.

"Thus, if you wish to upgrade from 1.5 or an earlier version, you must first upgrade to 1.6 or 1.7, migrate your database to UTF-8, and then upgrade to 1.8. Similarly, if you are using Moodle 1.6 or 1.7 and have not yet migrated your database, you need to do so before upgrading to 1.8. Please refer to Upgrading to Moodle 1.6 for additional information."

There is also documented somewhere a recommendation to skip 1.7 altogether, that is going from 1.5 to 1.6 then jumping to 1.8 and 1.9.

You mean when http://docs.moodle.org/19/en/Unicode talks of "1.6 or 1.7" it means just 1.6 because http://docs.moodle.org/19/en/Upgrading_to_Moodle_1.9 says "If upgrading from earlier than 1.6, we recommend upgrading to 1.6 first, then 1.8 -> 1.9"?

OK, I got it. The remaining question is what "it" is for the newcomer.

You got it (whatever the it is). Migrating to unicode text should be adjusted to remove the reference to 1.7 (when talking about versions before 1.6) to match the upgrading instructions.
