I am moving the discussion here from MDL-32528 because it is a general issue. In the settings navigation for a course, there are two sub-menus with inconsistent behaviour. The inconsistency is bad and we should fix it, but how?

  • The Course settings -> Users sub-menu has to be expanded before you can got to the things inside it. This is stupid becuase it takes two clicks to get to important settings like Enroled users and Groups.
  • The Course settings -> Question bank sub-meny is itself a link that goes to the same place as Course settings -> Question bank -> Questions. This is stupid becuase you click 'Question bank' to expand it on your way to Course settings -> Question bank -> Import, and it starts loading the next page. (But it does save you one click on the common case.

Can anone take an overview of how the course settings could be aranged so that there is no stupidity?

... and, if you are thinking about these navigation issues, you might also want to think about MDL-29630 - should reports appear in the Settings or Navigation block in courses or activities? Currently it is inconsistent.

Hi, Tim. I'm afraid there are much more stupidity in the new navigation than you think and not just with clicks: did you happen to read http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=200622

On general, I'm afraid there in no "better" one of those two options. Each one is better for one people and worse for other. Unless it is having JavaScript that would expand section when you place a mouse pointer over it for some time - like gmail left menu does - so that there is no need to click to expand section at all.

Thanks for moving this issue to forum.

Let me add an other inconsistency. The settings activity/ressource block element is used in different ways.

usability

The screenshot shows three different ressources/activities and the settings block elements.
From left to right: Forum - Quiz - Book.

  • Edit settings first: same for all: ok
  • Add roles to Restore as a block: ok
  • Edit content of activity: on several places in quiz and book
  • Individual seettings elements are at different places (marked yellow)
  • Some issues have icons: other don't use icons.
