This was flagged up to me this afternoon and I can't see find the explanation for it - I hope it is something simple; I even wondered if it was theme or load time related? Why is it sometimes if you click the "enrol cohort" button from Course admin>Enrolled users you sometimes see it this way:

and why do you sometimes (with no apparent changes) do you sometimes see it this way?

Whenever I post a question to moodle.org one of two things tends to happen:

  • I find the answer myself immediately
  • Nobody answers me!

Well I have not found the answer yet! So perhaps somebody might answer me?

Hi Mary,

The first screen is displayed when going to:
Course administration > Enrolment methods
and then choosing Cohort sync at the Add method list box.

The second screen is displayed when going to:
Course administration > Enrolled users
and then selecting the Enrol cohort button.

So maybe it was just a distraction about the path followed?

Hi Guilermo. Well I would have said yes, except for the purposes of this query, I have ONLY tried via course administration>enrolled users and seen both screens there. And what has been really strange is that on a couple of occasions I have clicked the button and got the first screen - tried again and got the second screen! (Which is why I wondered if it was slow loading, making up its mind which screen to display)

EDIT I just tried again on yet another Moodle 2 site and the same happened - the first time I clicked it took me to the first screen "users>enrolment methods" (even though I had not clicked there but had clicked Users>enrolled users) and then the second and subsequent times it took me to the second screen with more options, as you would expect. It must just be making up its mindsenyum lebar

Hi Mary,

I guess there must be some particular condition we are missing here. I've just noticed that both, the Enrol cohort and the Add method buttons "point" to the same URL: http://localhost/moodle22/enrol/cohort/addinstance.php

If I go to: Course administration > Users > Enrolled users
(http://localhost/moodle22/enrol/users.php?id=2)
and hover over the Enrol cohort button, the following address is displayed on the status bar of my browser:
http://localhost/moodle22/enrol/cohort/addinstance.php

If I go to: Course administration > Users > Enrolment methods
(http://localhost/moodle22/enrol/instances.php?id=2)
choose the Cohort sync option at the Add method list, which sends me to the Cohort sync display
(http://localhost/moodle22/enrol/cohort/addinstance.php?id=2)
and hover over the Add method button, the same address is displayed on the status bar of my browser:
http://localhost/moodle22/enrol/cohort/addinstance.php

However, as much as I have tried, both in M 2.2.1 (Build: 20120109) and M 2.2.2+ (Build: 20120405), I always get  the Enrol cohort window at Enrolled users, and the Cohort sync at Enrolment methods.

So this, as we would say in Mexico, es un "caso para la Araña" (is a "case for the Spider"): Thomas "Tubby" Tompkins senyum

Now that I come to think about this, I get the feeling that I have gone through the same thing while working with M 2.0.3, though I never paid much attention to it. I guess this effect must be related to a particular configuration: the 2.0.3 installation was a fully configured one, while the ones I'm using to do these tests are clean installs.

Interesting saying and linksenyum It is definitely (to me) due to a first visit and then a subsequent visit (or click) I tried on yet another Moodle 2.2 site just now and I paid careful attention to click on "Enrolled users>enrol cohort" - and I got the first screenshot (Cohort sync) So I clicked once more on "Enrolled users>enrol cohort" and this time I got the second screenshot (Enrol cohort) as you would expect The query was prompted by someone who had seen one of my screencasts in French and did not get the same screen as me - even though he also was clicking on Enrolled Users>Enrol cohort. I am  almost ready to give him an explanation!senyum

I know this conversation is a year old, but I have a related question. In your second screen view, what is the difference between the Enrol Cohort option and the Enrol Users option? I cannot seem to find anything that explains this.

Did some testing and answered my own question.

1) Enrol cohort option enrols all current members of the selected cohort and any users who are added to the cohort at a later time. In the list of enrolled users, the Enrolment Method indicates the name of the cohort, and the date/time of enrolment.

2) Enrol users option enrols all current members of the selected cohort, but new users who are added to the cohort at a later time are not automatically enrolled in the course. In the list of enrolle dusers, the Enrolment Method indicates Manual Enrolment (the same as if you had used the Enrol Users button instead of the Enrol Cohort button).

This makes perfect sense to me, and is what I suspected, but I wanted to confirm.
