Our project has many similarities to what you are trying to target. All of our instructors (mostly home school parents) and admin staff are volunteers and we develop our own materials for Moodle and Collaborate (live, online classroom) so that we can offer free courses to home school students. Our tools are paid for by voluntary donations primarily from home school families from several nations.
We are in our 6th year. We have about 40 courses and are serving a good sized number of students now. I have had Flag counter on the site for exactly two weeks (discovered the tool two weeks ago and added it to our home page). We have had 27 countries, 2037 unique visitors, and 7650 page views in that two weeks. I posted the stats so that you can see that it can be done.
