how long is a piece of string thing

Not a question for "using Moodle" really...

It is a massive program!  It obviously works very well, but what demand is there on setting it up in a basic structure for a definite non-tech-head type?深思的

There are many projects out there in the cyberbog of similar intent - hundreds(!) and my needs are simple:

1. 2-way communication - like a forum.

2. a simple Course structure with simple "go forward" controls (test pass)

3. a simple objective test creation element (remember I'm a NON-tech)

4. Rapid short curve to implementation. Time is the essence.

Is moodle a hammer to crack an egg in this case, or can it be a simple implementation? ( a ready-2-go simplified version?).

I WILL go look into the setup, but any advice very welcome.

Cheers!

Hi Jack,

#4 is likely to be a problem. The curve is short, but it is high.

Moodle lets you do whatever you want, but it's at least a one-month and probably a 3-month learning curve. It isn't Wordpress, which many of my tech friends extol. But, Moodle is more flexible and has more opportunities via its plug-ins then any of the others.

If your needs are simple and you don't want anything more than a simple course, then Moodle 2.1 is the way to go.

But if you have to be running tomorrow, then something with much less flexibility and much less opportunity is the way to go.

I've been moodling since the past three years, and the access to the back end is what keeps me here. If you go proprietary, you'll have trouble getting the reports you want. It really depends on the number of students you're working with.

Hi Ben,

THe only thing I've looked at recently was a pro constructor called savv-e.

(Strange name-strange presentation of their own but it is a cut-n-paste type of thing with poor support - haven't answered my query!)

My application is very low-end, so could involve considerable numbers and needs to be on automatic, basically.  E.G. only one requirement for a self-test.

Good to read you saying Moodle is a way to go - except for the curve.

Will hope to find some other low-tech peoples experiences as I go.

Cheers

Have a look at LearnBoost for a much simpler and easier program compared to Moodle.

Hi there,

I had a quick look at LearnBoost but I couldn't see either a Forum or a Quiz activity.

Did I miss something?

Cheers,

Glenys

PS. Years ago, I used Dokeos. I left because it didn't have the interactivity I wanted and found in Moodle: wikis, forums, integration of Hot Potatoes, groups, glossaries, etc. But it did have forums and now has a Quiz activity. Also a friendly and helpful community. It might suit you. I think it's still much simpler than Moodle. Six years ago it took me just a day to get the hang of it.

Hi Glenys,

I also went along and had a quick look at Dokeos. It does seem to be a pretty click-the-button setup, but again it looks strictly mainstream and I couldn't immediately see an easy way to use it for my application.

Cheers!

Hello Thomas,

Thank you.I did take a quick look at learnboost and on first glance it seems to be very simple, providing you are running a standard school curriculum project.

My own needs are quite simple and all of the material would be unique to the Course.

I couldn't immediately see how to do this outside the mainstream curricula.
