Important Notice - Moodle Docs

Due to a total revamp of Moodle Docs some existing Moodle 1.9 Theme and  FAQ pages have been duplicated and place in another area and labeled Moodle 2.0 and are in the process of being updated. So if you have looked for some guidance to help you learn more about Moodle 2.0 themes, and found these older Moodle Docs labeled 2.0 then you will have been sadly disappointed and led down the wrong path. So apologies for this.

I'm trying to regain some semblance of order in the chaos so if you find some Moodle Docs labeled as Moodle 2.0 but in the text refer to Moodle 1.9 please leave a link to that page in this thread and I'll go and Edit it.

Many thanks for your co-operation in this.

Surely Sam's docs at http://docs.moodle.org/dev/Themes_2.0 are already good, so we should just put in redirects to them?

Are you offering? smile

Themes 2.0 takes you to a page which is not written yet.

Development: Themes 2.0 takes you to Sam's hideaway.

But why are there three directories? 19, 20, and dev?

And why have all the Moodle docs from 19 been copied into 20 and left?

Don't get me wrong Tim, I know about the changes and have done for a couple of weeks but I did not realise then what an inpact it was going to have on us here in the Themes forum. We are so used to writing Themes FAQ & CSS FAQ but these links are not going to the right place. Also we do still give people help with Moodle 1.9. and trying to link to the correct Moodle doc is a bit of a nightmare.  There used  to be a redirect on a page but that seems to have vanished.

Personally, I think too much has been shifted to dev in the case of themes.

http://docs.moodle.org/dev/Themes_2.0 contains stuff that is not dev, IMO. The same for a few other topics like contib and roadmap.  I'm just waiting until 2.1 comes out before followng up on this.

It's clear to me there is a difference bewtween dev and help but I think at the moment the line is drawn to put to much into dev.  Part of the reason for my concern is help is more 'stable' - dev is more musing, and hypothetical.  People coming for help may not get what they want with the style of some dev docs.

my opinon.  I'm actually happy to do a first pass at the content of themes doc that I think should be in help, but as I've said before, I'm not realy sure about mandates with Martin getting involved soon to make a list  of work etc and I don't want to waste time

I'm inclined to agree with you Derek. I don't like the way all Moodle 1.9 Themes docs have been duplicated and added to the new Moodle 2.0 directory for a start.

The Development Theme's Tutorials are great for those people, like myself, who like to design Moodle Themes, and we are pleased that developers, like Sam Hemelryk, find time to write them and add to the knowledgebase about Moodle themes in general.

Actually, talking about Knowledge Base perhaps that is what we need. In fact thinking about this logically, a line should have been drawn after Novemebr 2010 and any Moodle Docs written after this time put into the New Moodle Kowledge Base. Thus leaving all the older docs intact. But then again I think that is what they are doing, but have gone the long way round. smile

Mary,

This one's not theme related, but I clicked on the link for upgrading moodle when i was downloading 2.1 and the documentation there is again a direct unedited copy of the 1.x version. I can't find any discussion about this anywhere else so have posted it here

http://docs.moodle.org/20/en/Upgrading

I think this on its own is a major issue with regard to the way the 2.0 docs have been created by simply copying the 1.x versions ready to edit - especially with moodle2 having hit a major upgrade to 2.1 and the documentation not being correct for administrators to use!

Also, with your/Derek's point - this is administrators' information and not developers' and while developers may well administer their site(s) administrators do not necessarily develop for moodle and therefore may be put off looking at 'developer' pages.

This is a much wider issue than themes documents, but I think is becoming a crucial one for moodle as I have talked to teachers who are being put off moving to moodle2 because of the issues with the documentation.
