I am have the following problem;

  • the teacher sets up an assignment - an 'on-line text' type
  • a student submits their work successfully
  • the teacher reviews the assignment and gives it some feedback. The assignment isn't graded per se as no scale has been set for this assignment, so there is no choice from the drop-down box. But feedback is left. The teacher nominates to send a notification email.
  • the student receives the email, clicks on the link - but isn't able to see the feedback, just their submission.
  • the student chooses the gradebook and can see her assignments - but when she clicks through to the assignment, there is no feedback.

This seems to be confined to some assignments or courses. The student is able to see feedback from other assignments in other courses (and there is a scale for this assignment).

Any clues to what is happening here? Is the lack of a scale causing a problem? Lastly, only some students received their notification email but I'm treating this as a separate issue.

Moodle 2.0 - but this assignment was set up a couple of years ago (yes, rare circumstances) under a previous Moodle version.

Me too! I was hoping someone might have a fix.

I have set up my assignment, marked it and given feedback, and uploaded a file with the rubric.

Out of 5 assignments, students received 3 - they see their grades for all, but do not get the feedback for the other two and do not get the file I have attached. It is very frustrating.

And no they do not get the email notifications either - though I read that is a recurring problem

How did you manage the mail to be received from the student?

I think that this fanctionality is not working in Moodle v2...

Did you find any fix?

As you can see, we aren't getting a lot of response.

Hate to say it, but this looks like one of those "weird things that happens with Moodle 2.0, maybe somethign to do with  the way your Moodle installation/upgrade went, maybe something to do with your email client/settings/ISP..."

I'm seeing the same thing. I have an Online assignment and when I provide feedback without assigning a grade, the feedback is not available to the student. If I go back in and assign a grade, the student is then able to view the grade AND the feedback. I can even go back in and remove the grade and the feedback is still viewable by the student. It appears the feedback is dependent on a grade being assigned, at least initially.

I would say this is a bug since we had the ability to provide feedback to the students in 1.9x without assigning a grade.

I am very sure it's not a "weird thing that happens." It's immediately reproducible on every server I have access to (my school, my personal, my local testbed, and demo.moodle.net).

I looked for your problem in the tracker, but it did not seem to be reported. Then I tried to replicate it on demo.moodle.net, but I could not find anything wrong. I tried using the quick grading too, no problem there either.

The disconnect, I think, is that those of us talking about the problem are saying that when you set the assignment settings to "no grade" (not give no grade to a submission), the students cannot see the feedback.

I usually go about the problem in 1.9 by assigning my own scales.  So I have reviewed, and changes needed as scale.  So the grade is "reviewed" and the feedback then can be viewed.  This may help you.

In the gradebook, you can further set the weighting of the reviewed assignment as zero.

I have the same problem. If I set the assignment to accept no grades, or I don't pick a grade, they don't see the feedback.

This causes a lot of trouble. I'm trying to let them see videos of their in-class presentations without any kind of grade on them (they are graded on 3 scales separately in the grades module).

Feedback also can't be seen if you hide the assignment in the gradebook (I tried this so that the students wouldn't be confused about an assignment with no grade).

This is listed in the bug tracker as a minor issue. I think it's a pretty big issue, because it's come up on quite a few forum postings.

If I pick "no grade" on an assignment with grading turned on, the students do get the feedback.

The issue remains that students cannot see feedback for:

  • An assignment with "No grade" selected in assignment settings
  • An assignment that is hidden in the gradebook

I confirm that the workaround above is effective.

If I pick "no grade" on an assignment with grading turned on, the students do get the feedback.

In addition to the two failures mentioned above, I'd add, students cannot see feedback for

  • An assignment with grading turned on, and a grade is given

Seems like a pretty big issue.

We have identified the same/similar problem today.

  • Student submits assignment
  • Tutor completes the feedback box and adds attachment with in text comment
  • Student clicks on the assignment link but sees only their original submission and no feedback.

This is a major issue, as we have staff delivering high volumes of feedback via this method.

Has this been added to the tracker ?

OK - this seems to work for us:

Change assignment to graded and link to grading rubric - makes no difference.

Select a grade from the rubric/ drop down box, and the student seems to be able to see the feedback immediately.

Looks like we need a code change so that feedback is visible irrespective of whether the assignment is graded (I only use soft grades for some courses - we are not yet using Moodle for formal grading).

We are running Moodle 2.2 and are having a very similar issue.  A teacher creates an assignment activity allowing a single upload of a file.  The teacher tries to give feedback, grade the submission and reattach it to Moodle.  Students don't get the email notification (they did once after the teacher cleared her browser cache, but that shouldn't have to be done each time - truly cumbersome) and the students can't see the file with teacher comments.  As a result the teacher is forced to email each student individually with their paper attached.  This seems to defeat the purpose altogether of the activity module.
