Repository metadata

Repository metadata

Hi all. This is a first message here, but likely not a last as my university (Uni of Nottingham) has adopted Moodle as official VLE, to be implemented in a few months time. I've never used Moodle before, so don't know the ins and outs, although I have looked at the fine manual before posting this:

What, if any, metadata can items in a Google repository be tagged with?

A course I'll be working with has various online and file resources which will need to go into some kind of repository. As there'll be hundreds of these there'll need to be decent metadata (at least DC, plus custom elements for local use), not least because the thing will need to interoperate with other course repositories.

I've looked at the following articles:

http://docs.moodle.org/en/File_system_repository_configuration

http://docs.moodle.org/en/Repositories_FAQ

http://docs.moodle.org/en/Repository

Metadata doesn't get a mention, as far as I can see. The impression I get is that the native Moodle repository is simply a file store, though you can 'plug in' external repositories. If the native filestore can't handle detailed metadata, then I could write a bespoke repository and try to develop a Moodle plugin for it - is there any documentation on doing this?

TIA for any positive suggestions. As a complete newbie to Moodle I could be asking a very simple or a very complex question, so apologies in advance for either.

I don't believe Google Docs files can be tagged with any usable metadata that Moodle can use.  You can tag files for organization in Google Docs, but I really don't think that's what you're looking for.

We are going to use Alfresco as our repository because we really want to try and keep as much content out of Moodle as possible and Alfresco handles metadata very, very well.  We will still have Google Docs as a "repository" in Moodle just so users can easily grab documents from their personal files on Google.

Unfortunately, using Alfresco means installing and managing another application, for which you may not have available hardware.  Also, Moodle does not currently support uploading files directly to Alfresco.  You can only grab files from the repository through Moodle.  I am developing a plugin that allows importing, and I can at least tell you that it is possible.

Those articles you have been looking at don't look very helpful.  My best advice would be to look at the repository plugins Moodle supports (Site Administration -> Plugins -> Repositories -> Manage Repositories) and then do research on each of those 3rd party applications to see what they support.  They will have way better documentation on what metadata, if any, they support.

I hope this helps a little and you find a good solution.

Thanks, Drew, that's very helpful. It confirms that Moodle's repository has minimal metadata, so that I need to either develop a custom job and build a plugin for it, or use a third-party repository. Our university uses Equella and I'm sure it'll be trying to build a Moodle plugin for it. My personal preference would be to build a custom job, but that'll depend on available time.

Thanks for the tip on Alfresco - I'd not heard of it before.

Can you, or anyone else, point me towards tech details as to how to build Moodle repository plugins?

Cheers

Fred
