LAMS at BETT conference last week

Not quite sure where this post should go so I stuck it here.

I chatted to the LAMS people at BETT this week just gone.  If you haven't heard of them before they are a company who is releasing a VLE open source shortly.  They plan to make money from customising their code much the way Martin does with Moodle at the moment.

LAMS is primarily designed for managing a classroom so its a bit different from Moodle which is much better as a distance VLE.  However, they did have a really neat flash interface, you can drag activities and forums onto a design sheet and it also has a neat display of where everyone is in the set of activities.  I wondered if it might be possible to combine the flash interface for use with moodle in some way?

have a look anyway,

I spoke with the main developer James Dalziel at the eFest in New Zealand last year about exactly that.  lächelnd

I followed the link... impressed... Can you comment on it Martin?
..from a Moodle perspective?

(For example: Can the layout block grow into this?)

So no immediate hook up? What was the snagging point?

Well, for one thing LAMS is not open source (yet) and the interface code is still being cleaned up for a public release.  Even when it is released there are some biggish differences in the backends we are using (I'm sure they could be overcome but I don't know how much work there is).  At this point it's in the air waiting on more information.

In any case, I really like Audun's new approach with his Javascripted layout block and it may even end up better than a Flash version anyway (it's easier to hack on)!

Yes, they have a strange forced fund raising mechanism for an Open Source: Pay in advance to set it free?
