I just recently learned of moodle implementing Smarty as a part of it's code base. I think that this is great! As a php coder and graphic designer this is good news.
I'm making one small request in the implementation. Please do not use the ".tpl" extentsion on template files. Other companies aka Adobe have started using it on their files. It screws up the headers. Besides that there is no reason, to my knowledge, that normal web extensions like ".html" or ".htm" or even ".txt" couldn't be used on the files.
Otherwise keep up the good work and I can't wait to see Smarty on Moodle 1.5!

Yes, we'd use .html of course (so that templates can be edited in HTML editors) but sorry, templates are not in 1.5. See the Future page (recently updated) for the latest.
