I wish to have something similar!
I need to track my students in this way:
- total time (hours/days) of a student on a course
- average time student per topic inside a course

...someone knows how to do that?

The Gizmo block is pretty nice for this, though it is a big java applet, takes a while to load, it gives a very nice graphical display of the Moodle logs.

I installed the block but whn I launch the export_data.php file it gives me this error:

Warning: mysql_fetch_array(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /home/_mywebsite_/moodle/blocks/gismo/export_data.php on line 63

..in many many lines.

I've been looking for this kind of error in the forums but ther's nothing useful.
It may be related to 'accept relative path' setting of the server?

Oh... i lost this discussion!

I'm realy happy someone found gismo on the sourceforge page!

We are developing it, i did some new changes but i didnt know someone was realy using it and i didnt update the sourceforge version...

Mh... i think i have to give to gismo some more time if you like it guys.

I added a loading progress bar while the applet is downloading (1,2mega) to let you know what happens, and i added the same progress bar while creating the charts (with lots of data its a bit slow - 150 students in 9 month of log).

If you send me your error page at christian.milani@lu.unisi.ch i'll find the error.

you dont need java to be installed on the server, only jre on clients.

to export the data i use php.

to get the data from the db to the applet i use php.

to visualize the data i use java (applet),  and only the clients need it.

TimePanel now works (bottom of the ChartArea), you can choose what you want to see on the timeline
All charts starts and end on the same date
Colored points on student-resource chart showing the number of hits (from white to red)
Corrected some minor bugs

Hi i tried the gismo latest version. It seems, that it doesn't work on 1.5 dev.
The reason is that the class moodleblock in moodleblock.class.php no longer exists.

You give it a try and try to rewrite it for 1.5 dev, Christian?

hello!

yes i put it yesterday evening, i added a new chart (students-resources, to see which students clicked on wich resources, next week i'll add the color on each point to understand how many times he clicked it)

The progressbar while loading (appletLoader + chartLoader).

I added 2 new lists (quizzes and assignments) and next week the charts on these things will be ready.

If you have any suggestions, problems anything contact me i'll be realy happy to help you!

Do you think it's heavy to download?

Although access time and a click number would be handy to know, it would still be hard to work out how much "thinking time" is going on around the moodle course as students read and interact with the resources posted. Is it better that student clicks on a resource 5 times to skim read it or just once to examine it in detail. Just  a thought.

Please keep developing GISMO, but let's get some research done regarding the data collected by this tool.  I have a strong feeling that clicking and learning are not as related as some people may think.

This thread is very old but where I work we are confronted with the problem of giving time statistics to a client for each student they're paying for. Yes, I do realise that they're chasing an illusion and that measuring the time spent clicking or not clicking in front of one's computer doesn't make much sense pedagogically. But that's what they want and "the client is always right." It has to be the time spent by each student: the client won't accept the "records of hits" on the course.

Is "GISMO, a graphical interactive student monitoring and tracking system that extracts tracking data from an online course maintained with Moodle, and generates graphical representations that can be explored by course instructors." still the best way to extract some figures without a lot of manual calculations?

I had today a teacher asking the same question: wishing quick overviews, based on the logs of student activity in his course - lets say the last two weeks - and it made me think again about GISMO (or a less heavy alternativ?)

A colleague of mine who's very clever with Excel has worked out a formula that does some number crunching and produces an answer in terms of hours and minutes.

I'll ask him to post his solution here.
