1)Q. Can an 18-year-old student excuse his/her own absences?

A. yes

2)Q. can an 18-year-old student leave the school campus at his/her discretion?

A. yes, but only with a valid excuse.

3)Q. Do parents and legal guardians retain their educational rights if the 18-year-old student still lives in their house? Who ultimately makes the final decisons?

A. No, Even though the student may still live with the parents or legal guardians and is claimed as a dependent, parents or legal guardians only have access to records, but can no longer make any decisons for the students.

4)Q. If an 18-year-old student needs to be transported to the hospital for further medical treatment and is denying treatment, can that student make the final determination or should his/her parent be contacted?

A. Since the student is now considered an adult, he/she has the right to make the decision to refuse treatment.

5)Q. Can parents or legal guardians have access to their child's student records even after the child turns 18 years of age or becomes an emancipated minor?

A. As long as the parents or legal guardians claim the child as a dependent on their federal income taxes, they retain the right to access their child's student records.
