Offline Moodle: How to use Moodle XML offline -- is it possible?

Hi,

I've left the college I was teaching at previously, and no longer have access to their moodle site.  The administrator has sent me a zipped file containing a moodle xml file along with three folders of resources (named course_data, moddfiles, site_files).  Is there a way to create an instance of moodle on my computer so that I can view and interact with the moodle site I'd created?  Otherwise, is there a way to perhaps find an open-access host of moodle where I could load my site to re-explore it, if only temporarily?

Thanks,

Jon

Hi Jon,

Search on Moodle for Windows, Poodle, or Bitnami Moodle Stack to find how to install and run a local version. It's a little complicated if your course is larger than 2 Mb. But, if you persist, you'll eventually be able to import and restore the course.

See documentation on backup&restore.

You don't really need an offline Moodle. Simplest way would be to download and install on your computer a complete Moodle package. The package contains everything that is required for running Moodle on localhost, so as soon as the installation is done you're good to go (not recommended for production sites but that's not what you need anyway). For windows packages see http://download.moodle.org/windows/, for Mac OS X see http://download.moodle.org/macosx/. You should pick the closest version to that which is used in that college. These packages are almost plug&play. Then you can restore your course from the zip you got from the administrator. 微笑
