Premium Series - A New Moodle 2.0 Theme

I've just uploaded a new theme called Premium Series for Moodle 2.0.

There's probably lots wrong with it, but hopefully it will be easy enough to fix.

The CSS is W3C compliant, as is the XHTML, both validated, which was a pleasent surprise! LOL

Let me know what you think of it. I can't say it's been an easy theme to make, but I have certainly learned a lot in making it. I think I know the Holy Grail No Querks 3 Column Grid system inside out.

Thanks for listening smile

Hi -just to say the download link is here (I figured it out) because the link in the Themes database isn't working - are you able to edit it? It looks absolutely beautiful and I am about to upload it to my Moodle 2.0 site.

LOL...visible-sexpression! what a typo!

Thanks for letting me know about the download. All fixed now.

I built this theme on my local CVS version of Moodle 2.0 so not sure how it might fair on earlier versions of RC1. I haven't uploaded it to my webserver as that's got one of the earlier preview versions (preview 3) and not that stable.

I hope you got it working?

Cheers

haha! I know about the typo - wasn't going to say it in public thoughbig grin

It seems to be working fine on my version online from yesterday (6th) although the Homepage tab confuses me a bit (unless it's me) because once logged in I assumed that clicking that tab would take you back to the front page but in fact it links to whichever page/screen you happen to be on at the moment? So do I have to make the link to my own homepage myself then? Is that what it means in your  instructions on the theme selector page? (as I have done to change the title Premium Series to my own words?)

Woops! I forgot to change the link for the hompage! in the a href tag for the link it should have a tiny bit of PHP like this <a href="<? echo $CFG->wwwroot ?> ">Homepage</a> Need to change both instances of the menu in frontpage.php and general.php, both of which are in the Layout folder of the theme.

I'll go and fix it and then reload the zip.

Thanks

Looks great Mary.

Manually changed the code above in both files and that works fine smile

Hoping to explore it more over the next few days, but really like the way it looks

Hi Richard,

Thanks for taking the time to drop by and leave a comment here. Glad you like the theme. I have a couple more I'm working on. And providing I can get this theme to work nicely, I'll unleash the others onto the unsuspecting Moodle community! smile

I've made a few changes to this theme already. The one Mary mentioned about and a few little tweaks, here and there, involving margins, padding, and font sizes. I'll upload the new zip later this evening.

I'm trying to figure out how to get the RSS Feeds block working. I've configured it but for some reason it's vanished!

Cheers

Hi Mary,

I absolutely LOVE your theme, and am in the process of integrating it into my site now.

I just have a question about the layout.  When you click on login, all of the text moves across and isn't readable.  What should I do to fix this?

Regards,

Lynda Margaret

Hi Margaret,

Which browser are you using? I've just tested it in IE8 FireFox and Chrome and none show the behaviour you described.

When you say Click on Login do you mean imediately after clicking the login button, or after one has logged in?

Hi Mary, I hope my Screen capture isn't too big.  This is IE8

Margaret,

It looks like I am going to have to make some changes to the CSS for various page layouts. Looking at yours in Firefox isn't too bad, but in IE8 it shifts too far to the right, thus distorting the page.

I'll post a fix for this tomorrow.

Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Cheers

Hi Lynda,

I've made some major changes to the pagelayout.css, a copy of which you can download HERE

Hope your pages look better with the new css installed?

Just extract the css file from the zip and place it into the styles folder of your premiumseries theme.

Filepath: premiumseries/styles/pagelayout.css

Cheers

Hi Lynda Margaret

So glad the changes work for your site, which looks absolutely fabulous! I am amaised at how well the theme seems to fit the purpose of your site, it is as though it were made for it!

I've made some changes to this theme and replaced the zip file with an uptodate version. You can download the new zip file from HERE

Here's the screenshot which I forgot to load at the start of this thread.

Mary,

I have a 1.9 site used for production but playing with a 2.0. I have been watching your posts on the Premium Series theme, downloaded it and unzipped it into the themes folder for my 2.0 site. When I use Theme Selector in Admin the Premium Series does not show on the list although I do see the entire set of files in the directory from my cPanel. Am I missing a step?

I am assuming (since the topic and download link were on the Moodle forum) that we are OK to try out your creation???

Re: Premium Series - A New Moodle 2.0 Theme

Hi Mike,

Yes you are free to use this theme. It's in the Moodle Themes' Database HERE

The problem you are having with not seeing the theme in the theme selector is a common occurance with cPanel, and is most probably the way you installed the theme probably using FTP. If you read section 1.1 & 1.2 in Themes FAQ, it explains, in simple terms, the process of uploading themes using cPanel. Your best bet would be to delete the Premiumseries folder from your Themes folder first, and then re-install it following the instructions given in that document.

Hope this helps?

Hi Mary,

Just downloaded your Premium Series theme and installed on my local Moodle 2.0 test site. Overall I like the design and the colors. I really like the look of the docking bar on the left, the dark grey background, etc. Am not such a fan of the fairly large logo bar at the top, with its - to me - useless twiter, facebook logos/links. But then I tend to not like logo bars at all on my moodle sites.

Attached screenshot shows 3 display problems:

  1. calendar font is so tiny as to be almost illegible
  2. notice "All caches were purged" in dark grey on medium gray background almost illegible; if this is the case with other notices, then should be amended
  3. sometimes the blocks headers briefly display their contents then ... nothing.

Thanks,

Joseph

Dear Joseph,

As always you have a knack of finding important faults, thanks for that.

The calendar font on my site isn't as small as that, it's more likly the resolution you have.

The side blocks are a pain. I'm finding that behaviour in other themes. I think it's a cache thing. Some times it works OK other times not.

I'll take a look at the theme again and see if I can tidy it up.

Thanks again,

Mary

Hi Mary,

The calendar font is really tiny in the Premium Series theme, it's not a matter of one's screen definition. Firefox firebug Display element information shows:

standard theme
td .day Attributes class = day
Font Family:    Arial,Verdana,Helvetica,sans-serif
Font Size:    8.83333px

premium series theme
td .day Attributes class = day
Font Family:    Georgia,"Times New Roman",Times,serif
Font Size:    4.8px

4.8px, that's a tiny font-size sad

Please compare sizes using the Standard theme and the Premium series theme screenshots.

Joseph
