What is the definition of a message in Moodle.org?
I am am now getting messages from myself:
Hi Derek. It probably isn't an instant message but a forum post - if you go to your message settings you can have forum posts sent you via pop up when you are online as well as instant messages - you can change this to only via email if you wish. (or -er - on second thoughts maybe it is a message ?)
By a process of elimination I think the answer to my original question :What is a message" is this:
A message is an IM from the 1.9 OR a foum post in a subscribed forum.
As Dan says go to a settings block.
You see this:
I thnk "Online" means "If you are Online" and you have a choice how to get messages. I suspect in the Moodle.org upgrade we were all set to put messages into popups.
The key message is message means different in 2.0 than 1.9
Hi Jeff,
there was a fix pushed through for IMs last night that caused forum posts to end up in the messages page even if already e-mailed - Andrew has pushed through some new changes today which should prevent more messages from ending up there! (unfortunately you'll need to clear all the old ones manually)

Hi Derek,
In Moodle 2.0 these are the conditions in which one receive messages from oneself:
1.- Profile settings / Messaging:
Subscribed forum posts
Online Popup window ticked
Not online Email ticked
2.- In a forum to which you are subscribed, post a message.
3.- In moodle.org's instant messaging popup window, that message you wrote in the subscribed forum will be instantly displayed, and it will look like you are sending a "message" to yourself.
If you are subscribed to a number of forums with lots of activity, I suggest it's better to set those settings (see attached screenshot).
