Hello Friends,

I am just starting to use Moodle.  Please share shortcuts for setting up a course, best practices for course management, and for God's sake encouragement as I learn to use this system for coursework.  Thank you in advance.

Hi

I'm not sure that looking for shortcuts is a great idea.
Firstly, The MoodleDocs site has a wealth of searchable information that will help.
Then there are the community driven Forums here on Moodle.org - that contain information, but also lots of people happy to help where they can smile
Encouragement comes as standard in the Forums!

It's nice if your profile has a real name, as people generally feel more comfortable talking to 'someone' rather than 'something' I think.

As you are just starting to use Moodle this page gives you important and useful resources: http://moodle.org/mod/resource/view.php?id=1361

Like with anything worth doing, it's worth doing well, so you will have to invest some time in learning and experimenting, and although this takes time, the learning is of course deeper than scratching the surface. Moodle is a popular and sophisticated LMS, and everyone learns differently, and has different needs. So you could also search around for some good training courses which might get you up-to-speed more quickly?

Read the Documentation and get yourself stuck in, when you hit a problem search the forums for answers (I found that rarely I am the first person to experience a problem).

If you cant find an answer then ask away! If someone knows how to help then they usually will smile

I second the comments by Stuart and Dale. Are you intending to be a Moodle developer (i.e. work on the underlying PHP/JavaScript/SQL) or are you intending to develop content/courses?  Either way you might consider one of the books from Packt publishing

http://www.packtpub.com/books/moodle

I met some of them at a Moodle conference, nice people

Another resource that I don't think has been mentioned yet is the Moodle programming course on http://dev.moodle.org/.

Well, in that case, I think when you started it did not exist on moodle.org.

This might not be the best forum for you if you are primarily interested in developing courses in Moodle; this forum is focused on the software development aspect. If you want to learn about developing courses, you might want to look at the forums under "Using Moodle for Teaching"
