Good news, after extensive playing with the firebug thing in Firefox I have finally fixed the error with this theme and the database module.

The database module calls on it's own js.php which was clashing with the one in the theme. So I've renamed the theme one as menujs.php (and ammended the link to it in header.html).

It's available for download - pending approval to the themes database - at http://moodle.org/mod/data/view.php?d=26&rid=3934

Excuse me English, do not write very well.

The fact is that my moodle is version 1.9.14.1 but the theme was the same way the fellow above. Did not save any configuration of the subject.

Any procedure beyond uploading to the themes folder needs to be done?

Thanks for your help.

Has anyone else experienced the problems with the block menus (mis-aligned, distorted, etc)

Re: Aardvark 1.4 - Database module fixed! - Released

Good evening John,

I didn't see any problem with the page as you have it in the image, that's why I asked what is your question. The side block menus have editing icons which is normal in editing mode, this, as you must know, allows administrators and course designers to amend the relevant blocks. If the teacher in question is not an administrator, or course designer, then perhaps the permission for that teacher have been set wrongly.

Re: Aardvark 1.4 - Database module fixed! - Released

Mary.

The permissions are fine, if I switch to another theme then everything is as it should be - so thats why I posted it in this thread (as it could be a bug in the theme) and I was wondering if anyone else has experienced the issue I have.

If you look at the direct link (http://www.dnapromotions.co.uk/menu.jpg) - didnt upload it to the real VLE - and make the image full size, you will see that in the

'Main Menu' and 'Upcoming Event's blocks, the editing icons are over some of the block content and in the case of the 'Main Menu' block - the links within the block have distorted text.

Also, the option to Add a New block has dissapeared from the right hand side.

Again, if I switch to a different theme it all works fine.

I have been a Moodle Admin for about 5 years and actually assist in the upgrade and patching of Moodles for 3 other colleges (although dont really do much with themes -which is why Shaun's theme's are so fantastic!)

Re: Aardvark 1.4 - Database module fixed! - Released

by Mary Evans -
To tell you the truth, John, I thought that 'edit' look was part of the theme, I hadn't realised how the sidebar commands where so badly placed, so apologies for my first reaction.

Try this snippet of CSS to override the current settings. You can take out the current CSS for this element and add the CSS in its place, or just add the mark-up to the end of aardvark.css file, it's up to you, either way you should see an improvement.

.sideblock .commands {
background: url(images/sideblocks/commandsB.png) !important;
border: 1px dotted #ddd;
padding: 0;

}

Please note when copying:
When you copy and paste the above code, it's best to paste into Notepad first to strip any formatting picked up from this web page. You can then safely copy from Notepad and past into the css file.

As for the ADD BLOCK being missing, I'm not sure what might be casuing that other than some conflict with the site topic panel of images you have on site.

Hope this helps?

Mary

Hello,

Nice Theme. I also had problems installing it, on a Moodle 1.9.8 linux shared server.

The problem seems to be related with other Activities or Blocks styles.php.

We found a temporally solution by disable "modsheets" and "blocksheets" variables inside the aardvark_pro/config.php file.

Hope you may help us to find a better permanent solution.

Best Regards.

Re: Aardvark 1.4 - Database module fixed! - Released

by Mary Evans -
And still it failed! OK

What platform are you using on your website? Linux Apache MySQL PHP(LAMP)?
Windows Server 2008? What?

If you use cPanel you could try re-installing the theme using the instructions HERE
Also check that permissions are set correctly as per the instructions on line 3 of that page.

When you tried the theme and it failed, at what point does it actually fail? When you go to select, or after?

Can you see the screenshot of the theme? If Yes, when you select the theme do you just Preview?

If you select the theme fully, do you see the CONTINUE button at the bottom of the page? If you click CONTINUE, does the theme look OK but the menu does not work?

If the menu doesn't work, which browser are you using? This type of menu will not function in IE6. If you have access to Firefox, use it rather than Internet Explorer.

Also this type of menu uses JavaScript, so do you have JavaScript enabled?

Hi Shaun and Mary:

I'm having the exact same problem everybody else on this thread, I installed the theme normally, and same thing: apparently css is not being applied neither to the admin section nor the visitor one.

Since this might have been a conflict of css or php code calling css, I disabled the modsheets and blocksheets as some people suggested in the theme's config file, but that didn't do it.

I also tried using different browsers and using the zip file mary provided, didn't work either.

So now after doing my home work I'm invoking the collective wisdom and maybe somebody can help me figure it out. My test install (the one I'm trying to get to work) is in here: http://503estudio.info/moodle/

Thanks a lot

Jose,
Just to check - if you are using cPanel, have you uploaded it as the zip file and used cPanel itself to unzip and install to Themes and change the permissions?
This seems to be an issue that several people have reported on in various theme discussions as cPanel does not appear to recognise the theme upload properly if you copy the previously unzipped folder.

Hi richard,

actually im with godaddy so im using their custom administration panel. To install i did everything thru FTP and used the admin panel just to create the database. Im on filezilla for FTP and thats what i used for chmod 755 the permissions. To upload the file i downloaded to local machine and then i unzipped locally and FTPed evrything to the server, then thru the theme select menu i selected the theme clicking choose and then continue.

But i have no idea what went wrong. Any help appreciated.

Hi Jose,

In GoDaddy, can you upload ZIP file to server then EXTRACT to theme folder in Moodle?
You might find the find Moodle Doc Themes FAQ a useful starting point.

From memory I seem to recall GoDaddy use cPanel (Control Panel).

With regards FTP it could be that your php files have been corrupted because styles.php is empty.

Just try opening styles.php and look for anything that looks odd like ASCII characters instead of normal text.

Jose,
Not familiar with godaddy and their custom admin panel, but if it has an option to upload the zip file and unzip it there I would try that as Mary has suggested.
I have successfully used filezilla to ftp themes on some hosts before and failed on other hosts, but where available uploading the zip and unzipping it in place has always worked for me. I think the problem is there rather than with the theme.
I'd suggest following the links in Mary's post and seeing what happens then.

Richard and Mary:

You have been so helpful, thanks for helping people getting started on moodle. Everything is working fine now, as you guys suggested i unzipped on the server and everything got fixed. I have to add that this seems utterly wierd since the files I have uploaded to my server never had gotten corrupted on the move, I've done countless wordpress installs and some magento, zencart, joomla, drupal, etc with no problems, this is the first time this happens. I'm just wondering what's different with moodle.

In respect of Goddady admin panel, well yeah they use cpanel but that's for dedicated virtual servers and up. Right now I'm on shared hosting and for that they use their own panel. It has a file manager that allows you to unzip on the server though.

Thanks again for your help.

I have the same problem as Virginia Cruz.

I have uploaded all the files for the theme, CHMOD all files and folders to 755.

In the themes list the is no screenshot. When I enable the theme it shows as in virginia's screenshot above.

I am using 000webhost's free hosting package and I downloaded both the Moodle and the theme yesterday, so both are the latest release.

I have tested in IE8, IE7, FF, Safari and Chrome browsers.

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

As 000webhosts does not have cPanel, that is a little difficult ;)

I deleted, reuploaded and re CHMODed all the files 3 times and got no joy, so I have now installed another theme.

Thanks anyway, but there is obviously a problem there somewhere... sorry I can't give any more info that would help you iron it out.

I install scripts all the time, so I know the common issues. I followed the instructions to the letter too.

Hope you get it sorted out, as it's a nice theme.

The one I installed that worked is similar and I changed some of the graphics to suit.

But, the for the menu, it is not automatic linked, it appears as "Fist menu, Second menu....". Previous version "aardvark_beta_auto_menus", that one can auto assigned, but will cause 404 error when I click the link. so what can i solve this problem.

My theme has never had automatic menus. You need to manually enter the links in the aardvarkmenu.php file. But it's YUI based now so you can either write it in HTML or use a generator like the Dreamweaver plugin.

Re: Different theme for Explorer 6

by José Mario Peña -
Hi monia:

I don't know hot to exactly do it but i might point you in the right direction.

Since IE has special tags only he recognises (in the form of special formatted comments) what you may be able to to is to link to <IE7 user to another stylesheet, one thats lighter and works on IE6. So same HTML structure, different simpler CSS.

Hope this helps.

Really.. IE6 across the school in June 2010... Does your network admin not care about security?

Your network admin should really look at installing a WSUS server and getting all those computers up to date; because if IE is still at version 6 I bet there are a whole lot of other security fixes that have been applied...

Just a quick question - how would you add a banner in between the tags and the search tags box, as seen on the Leeds City College site...

Is that a theme thing, or somehow added within Moodle core? Any ideas would be appreciated.

Can you explain exactly how you get to the point where the menu breaks, so that I can test it on my server?

Can you also give me some indication as to the type of platform your Moodle site is running on, what version of Moodle, and also which browser are you using when the menu breaks?

Hi,

It's difficult to say what could be causing this behaviour. Has this only just started to happen or was it like this from the start, after you first installed it?

It might be your version of Moodle needs updating, especially the YUI files.

Try using Firefox browser and tell me if it works any differently then.

Re: Aardvark 1.4 - Database module fixed! - Released

If it doesn't happen in Firefox then it's an IE only issue and not worth the bother of trying to fix. IE Box Model works completely differently than any other browser. However, I know for a fact this theme works in IE8, so if you are using any other IE browser ( IE6 or IE7) then you should update to IE8 ASAP.

Re: Aardvark 1.4 - Database module fixed! - Released

Here's an interesting tidbit. I found (for me at least) this error is directly related to having the block "local cloclk" present and installed. All of the pages that render incorrectly are editing pages with the local block js in the header. Removed the block, and all pages render correctly. (except in IE6, but seriously, who still uses that except some very slow moving corporations *cough*ups*cough*)

I'm sure I've seen this mentioned before somewhere...

Just can't seem to find it sad

The issue is header text overlapping the content in the sideblock (as attached). I know, don't put so much in the header. However, having a second visible line here would be useful is some cases.

Sorry to be redundant

<object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="<?php echo $CFG->wwwroot.'/theme/'.current_theme() ?>/images/header/logo.swf" width="760" height="143">
<param name="movie" value="<?php echo $CFG->wwwroot.'/theme/'.current_theme() ?>/images/header/logo.swf" />

An excellent theme that I have modded to be appropriate for our school, thanks!

However one of our staff (who thinks he owns the VLE) has complained that the drop down menu on web page Resources has disappeared.  Unfortunately I'm not sure what code to put in where.  We use to use the custom corners theme and it displayed correctly there so I assume it is just a little bit of code.  It would be nice to shut him up as he is the only who doesn't like the change and is constantly bellyaching about it!

"...drop down menu on web page Resources has disappeared..."

Is this dropdown menu something you have deleted or would it be still visible in any other Moodle theme? Indeed would it still be there if you selected your old theme settings again, if you still have that old theme that is?

Is it perhaps something which needs to be added to the Aardvark menu when this particular resource page is loaded?

If it's a core menu, meaning something which is generated by the system rather than the theme, I can't see that modifying Aardvark 1.4 should have any effect on core menus. However, having said that there might be a conflict with some JavaScript in YUI menu widget somewhere along the line.

I feel that to try and fix this problem for you, we really need some more information re: the menu which is lost!

Further to my last comment.

I think your colleague may well be right, since by installing this theme you have indeed lost the link to the Resources log, which I think is what your colleague is talking about.
The way this theme is coded, it will take a fair bit of knowledge about php and such to put that specific link back, something which you obviously don't know how to do or else you would not be here!

Indeed I sympathise with your colleague, since I much prefer Custom Corners over Aardvark. If you would like to see the original aardvark menu set into Custom Corners you can HERE.

In the mean time I'll try and get a working copy of an amended Aardvark Pro 1.4 for you, if nothing other that to appease your distraught colleague!

Hope this all helps?

Mary,

That would be great!  I find the colour scheme in Custom Corners to be horrible and the graphic panels of Aardvark look really good hence we decided to switch.  I tried to find the bit of code in custom corners but it has been laid out very badly without line breaks so it is difficult for anyone but the original coder to find the relevant bits of code, unlike Aardvark.

Re: Aardvark 1.4 - Database module fixed! - Released

by Mary Evans -
Hi David,

Sorry but I haven't had the time to do redo the header for you for this theme, however, what you need to do all depends on how your corporate style looks like. If you still have the profile block, which I hate, then adding the extra menu for the whole site will be a nightmare for you. If on the other hand you do away with the profile block, you only need to add the php code $menu which you will find in standard theme header.html very simple to do and less fussy. You can tweek the CSS to make it look nice.

There is another alternative to all this, and might also be a compromise for your colleague too, would be to allow session themes. Which allows any theme to be used in a session, from loging-on to logging-off. This you can do if you have access to the main config.php for your Moodle site as this discussion explains.
http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=147935

This last method would be the best of both worlds...in that you would not need to change Aardvark and your colleague could still use the old theme! smile

So a simple addition to your url for example at my site you can view standard theme...

http://visible-expression.co.uk/moodle/?&theme=standard

or Studio theme

http://visible-expression.co.uk/moodle/?&theme=studio

I have my web server set this way as it makes it easier to swap from theme to theme depending on which theme I want to view.

Hope all this helps?

Mary

Sorry I thought this had been answered already!

If you want to use the old way of logging in, then do this...
at the point in the header.html where it has this code...

<?php include('profileblock.php); ?>

Delete it and put this code in the same place...

<?php echo $menu ?>

Hope this helps?

Hi Mary

Thanks for your reply. I just wanted to double check this code - I tried looking for the code above and could not find it in the header.html file.

The functionality I need is to be able to have set of username and password boxes in the Header so users can login on the homepage. This used to exist on the old Aardvark themes and also in the Aardvark - liteheaded.

If you could send me a modified header.html file this would be really appreciated.

Thanks for your help

Manj

Oh...the old Aardvark! smile

OK - will do what I can. I'll get back to you. Perhaps it might be an idea if you send me your email in a private message here then I can email you back the modified profileblock.php.

Thanks

Mary

Hi Manj,

This is how the site looks from the files you sent me. There seems to be come css missing from the aardvark.css.

Hi Shaun

I have made suite of themes based on your fab Aardark 1.4. What i would like to do enable the themes to use just one copy of the aardvark_menu.php file. Could you help me with where the file is called from as i can't seem to locate it.

Cheers Stephen

What! You've made a suite of themes based on Aardvark, and can't find the line of code in the header.html which calls the menu? You're not looking very hard are you! LOL

Look for <?php include('aardvark_menu.php'); ?> in the header.html file.

I can't see how you can get this to work just using the one aardvark_menu.php file, but I will be interested to see how you get on with this, as it sounds an interesting idea.

Cheers

I've been looking through everything i can, but i can't seem to figure out how you put a picture at the top of the center column above the student news section. Is it a setting in moodle or is it in the coding?

Try looking in Frontpage>Frontpage settings.

There is a 'Tick Box' next to Site Topic which is the area which you are talking about.

Site Topic is supposed to be activated by default, but it's not.  Ticking the box will make it appear on the site. So tick the box and save the page then go back to the homepage and Click 'Turn editing ON'  You should then see the resouce and activity form menus appear above Site news.  Above these two menus you will see to the left a tiny Edit icon that looks like a hand holding a pen. Click this and the Text Editor page pops up. Add your text/images here, save and display.

A note of warning here. If you are going to add images make them smaller or resize them as you add them, so that they fit easily in the Site topic area, which is limited to about 500px to 550px on a 1024x768 resolution screen, as the side blocks are both set to 210px by default. Otherwise if the images are too big they will distort the page.

Hope this helps?

I have a question about widths.I currently have width set as a precentage but this is causing layout problems in certain courses and looks odd when browser windows are resized.

I know how to fix overall width in css sheet. However I would also like to fix the width of the block units and the position of the block units which sometimes get pushed out to the side and the blocks also shrink in width in certain cases.

Would be grateful if you could point me in the right direction.

Re: Aardvark 1.4 - Database module fixed! - Released

You can set sideblock width in

#layout-table #left-column,

#layout-table #left-column { width: 210px }

Also, I have found if you set

#page { width: 95%; margin: 0 auto;}

This gives you a nice border eitherside of the page and if you set the widths of the left and right column as written above, your pages adjust accordingly.

Also you could set

#layout-table #middle-column { width: 98%; padding: 0  1%;}

this keeps the middle column in it's place.

Hope this helps?

Thanks for the speedy response. I have tried setting sideblock width but in certain cases especially when I try to fix #page width the blocks on the left shrink.

Not sure how this happens if I have fixed width.

There is also this which I am not sure what it is setting

#pagelayout {
width:960px;
margin-left:auto;
margin-right:auto;

Re: Aardvark 1.4 - Database module fixed! - Released

by Mary Evans -

Hi,

I don't think #pagelayout exists. I have hunted for it in Aardvark theme and never found it. Leave it in but change the width to match the setting you have in #page or comment it out.  There was a #wrapper at one time in an earlier version, but that got deleted, but some end </div> tags still remain in the footer. So my advice to you is...

1. validate all the CSS files you have for this theme using W3C Validator by uploading your CSS files

2. Check thoroughly to see if all <div> have a corresponding </div> in both header.html and footer.html.

3. As a last resort to fix the sideblocks you could try this

.sideblock { width: 210px !important}

If you have any problems with CSS errors you can't fix  let me know and I'll fix them.

Hope this helps?

I've added that fix as an option to the code in the Moodle Doc link I posted earlier.

Glad all is working now!

Your site looks great by the way!
