I am wondering whether we need to create a DimDim forum. At present there is only a thread created in Messaging which is outdated. DimDim has been left hanging for a couple of years but now is rolling out a new version (5.5) with which I think they intend to become more aggressively involved with Moodle, which will be a boon to users of their free as well as fee based service.

As the new plugin will require some tweaking of plugin db entry etc, if we can add a forum (if not just for dimdim than perhaps for web conferencing modules) those tweaks need only be made once and can then point to this new location.

What do folk think?

I like the idea to have a forum for web conferencing modules. Users would find important information a lot faster and would know where to look for. If those who have not yet tried a web conference tool so far, they may be encouraged to do so when they will find all necessary information in one place.

I'll second either option!

I looked into a few different Moodle-linked web-conferencing options a year, or so, ago. At the time, I felt the Dimdim integration was the most impressive because it 'just worked' and neatly used infornation already in Moodle (email address of participants etc) to set up the Dimdim conference session with minimum effort.

Would also be useful to collate information of the pros and cons of setting up an 'in house' video conferencing (and other streaming media) server linked to Moodle.

I'd support a DimDim forum, or Hartmut's idea of a broader web conference/webinar one. (I'm also looking at ePresence and Elluminate).

I'm just about to get started with a Mahoodle implementation with a technology provider and having viable alternatives for synchronous media would be great.

Not a bad idea. I would make it a Live Meeting Help (or something like that) forum under the Using Moodle for teaching section that would catch all the questions that come in related to this activity as provided by different platforms (e.g., DimDim, Elluminate, Adobe Connect, WebEx etc.). This technology is just going to become more and more important to Moodle.

Rather than try and figure out where to respond I returned to top of thread to indicate that I created a tracker item here: http://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDLSITE-927
As you will see I presented Helen the idea with both alternatives (module specific forum versus generic forum for webconferencing modules) and I linked back to this discussion. Please sound off and vote and hopefully one way or the other we can get this implemented in the near future. BTW, if you want to go with genre, comments about demarcation would probably prove helpful as far as providing the summary as to what the new forum would and would not be intended to address and the basis for any argument.

I also wanted to note that trying to maintain a thread over years really does not work very well and would argue that while the forum is good place to ask questions after a review of the docs and a good place to discuss issues, it is not the best place to find answers as it will more often than not lead one on a wild goose chase. With DimDim, Rajesh as do many of the contrib maintainers, pointed to one thread to address questions, and that for a variety of reasons has not been very effective, while pointing to docs for answers and a forum to post questions is more effective (assuming that those who can do keep docs updated - hence my argument that PHM status, if that is going to be a continuing artifact, should be based not so much on useful forum postings as on moving answers to the docs..... but then we silliputians are set in our ways like that....)

And, I suppose I am obliged then to note that there is a tracker item for an active search that would direct moodlers to the most appropriate place to find answers to their questions http://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDLSITE-552 which I think would be cost effective from the standpoint of reducing thrashing that results from posts to mutiple fora, posts to the wrong forum, and the hours one might spend trying to winnow an answer from fora threads. I have installed the Dim Dim Plugin, but when I click the "click here to start meeting" link "The connection has timed out" occurs. Can somebody please guide me.

This is the link that shows the error: "http://www1.dimdim.com:85/dimdim/html/signin/signin.action?cflag=rmhwmxc"
