Is it at all possible to allow non-alphanumerical characters and uppercase letters in a user name?

I would also like to know this, as well as if spaces in user names (i.e. "John Smith") could ever be possible.  Thank you

If you look at /login/index.php line 100ff. you will see that Moodle changes the user name to lower case and strips off most non alphanumeric characters.

Regarding the use of uppercase letters there's already an issue in the tracker: MDL-9989 Please vote for that issue to be resolved.
