Follow-up: I created choices based upon the student suggestions and the students voted on them. That went well. (But a couple of times when they voted, I could see their vote, but from the student view, it was as though their vote had not been added to the database. I watched them vote, and they did not seem to be doing anything wrong.)
I was very pleased to see that one of my quietest students really asserted herself at one point. I did not know that she had such strong feelings about essay-writing and creativity!
I obviously still need to learn a lot more about creating and administering this sort of learning activity, but I am sure that we will keep working at it in my classes.
