I agree that the lesson module's adaptability could provide perfect for you.

I have used lessons to their full potential - I use branches but I also use image maps etc to link to 'hidden' lesson pages before bringing them back to the main route though. I also adapt the web pages' functionality with javascript etc.

I use hyperlinks embedded in a lesson page to link to the 'fuller' Moodle quiz options, which allows me greater flexibility in using detailed quiz activities while still keeping the learner inside the lesson. The 'mini-quizzes' inside lessons aren't that complex and are limited on grading/adaptability, so apart from essay I don't use them. By adding a link in to a 'full' quiz or other activity I get round this beautifully...
