Check Answer Caption

Check Answer Caption

Hi again!

In my quest to make my quizzes friendly to non readers, I want to put symbols in the "check answer" and "OK" captions.  For some reason, although there is the option to insert a picture on these buttons, the pictures don't come out.  I addressed the question to the HP Users forum and it seems that for some reason these buttons are configured differently from the rest. A few of us tried, with different browsers, and same negative result, although Martin was able to see the pictures in IE.  It was suggested I take the inverted commas away from the gif name and it worked!  But, alas, Moodle doesn't like it and the pictures don't come out.

I have uploaded (yet another) test to Gordon's site, named Deborahtest4.  I am so sorry but I didn't know how to wipe off my other tests on the site or bring the file up as an activity, but the file did successfully upload

Regarding the browser thing, I am doing all my testing on IE because there is no way I will be able to get my students to change browsers, so I am stuck with the wicked IE.

Again, apologies for being such a pain and multiple thanks in advance.

Hi Deborah,

Here are my findings re your image in button problem.

I have inserted gif (with transparent background) images in the "Check Answer" and "OK" captions buttons.

The images are correctly displayed in the following situations:

  • HP exercise executed on local machine in MSIE 7 or FireFox 3

  • HP exercise uploaded to Moodle and HP activity using the HTML file, in MSIE 7 or FF 3

The images are not displayed in the following situation:

  • HP exercise uploaded to Moodle and HP activity using the hot potato file, in MSIE 7 or FF 3

The problem seems therefore to be with the HP interpretating module in moodle, so I expect Gordon may find an answer. Unfortunately you do not say which of the 2 methods you are using in Moodle for inserting your HP exercises (using the original HP file or using the HTML file).

Oops!blush
I had not uploaded my most recent version of the HP files to my moode files. I confirm that the image inside the button works for HP files and HTML files in both browsers, so it always works.
And, further to Gordon's recent message, it looks like Deborah still had file names with "forbidden" characters in them.

Hi Joseph

I just went to Gordon's site and opened Deborahtest5. The images on the caption buttons for "check answer" and "OK" do not show up. How comes you see them then? Different browser versions? I am using IE6.

Regarding the "forbidden" characters! No! Please don't say it! There can't still be forbidden characters in that file. It's a conspiracy. Even if there are - and I just looked again and can't see any - I don't think that's the problem here as the rest of the quiz is working.

Deborah,
there are no longer any forbidden characters or file names in the quiz. No problem there.

How about if you right click on the check button, where you think the images should be, and select "Show images" from the drop down menu. Does that display the images?

Oops sorry Gordon you've lost me there! You mean click on the check button whilst watching the actual quiz? The only drop down menu I get is "copy, paste, select etc." Tried doing it on the configuration page in case you meant that, but no drop down menu there either. I seem to be missing something here.........?

Deborah,
  1. can you see the tick and cross graphics in the check button?
  2. if you click the check button, can you see the no_no graphic?
  3. match the a's in the left hand column to the pictures in the right hand column, and then click the check button.
Can you see the revolving smiley?

Gordon, it all works!  I was able to see the images without dragging them in from the browser.  And the quiz on your site works in IE6!  I see that you amended it.  I studied the code of the two quizzes but couldn't see what you had done.  What wizardry did you work?

Hi Deborah,
great news! Thanks for the confirmation that you quiz is working as you require approve

> What wizardry did you work?

My previous posts reveal what I can remember of what I did, but for the last word in the matter, you could try a program such as WinMerge or NotePad++ which can compare two files and tell you how they differ.

I think one important point was to ensure that your IE6 browser was not relying on its cache (=saved copies of files). By clicking on the list of links in my earlier post on this thread you were ensuring that your IE6 cache was uptodate.

Anyway, please download the jmt file from my server so that you can use it as it is. It will also serve as a good template for future HP exercises that you make.

Thanks to Joseph to for trying out the quizzes and helping to identify what worked and what didn't.

all the best
Gordon

I am so sorry but I don't succeed in downloading the files from your server. When I copy them I just get a gif and I don't see any other way of doing it. Please could someone enlighten me.blush

Thank you so much.

Deborah,
you can download a zip file of the whole folder containing the modified jmt file and its associated images and sounds from here:
If prompted for login details: username=guestteacher, password=quizportv09

cheers

I made a few changes to the quiz and it seems to work OK (in FF and IE) on the latest Moodle 1.9 when I run the quiz from the jmt file:
Here (from memory) are the changes I made to your quiz to get it working:
  • add the double quotes back into the "Guess correct" and "Guess incorrect" strings in Options -> Configure output -> Prompts/Feedback
  • ========================
  • change all "no-no.gif" to "no_no.gif"
  • change all "speaker black.gif" to "speaker_black.gif"
  • change all "angry a.mp3 " to "angry_a.mp3"
  • change all "ant a.mp3 " to "ant_a.mp3"
  • change all "apple a.mp3 " to "apple_a.mp3"
  • ========================
  • rename "no-no.gif" to "no_no.gif"
  • rename "angry a.mpf" to angry_a.mp3"
  • rename "ant a.mp3" to "ant_a.mp3"
  • rename "apple a.mp3" to "apple_a.mp3"
Please use only the following characters in the names of folders and and file names you upload to Moodle:
  • letters: a-z, A-Z
  • numbers: 0-9
  • underscore: _
  • period: .
If you use any of the following you may well have difficulties linking files, backing up files and using files in HotPot activities
  • spaces
  • hyphens
  • parentheses
  • non-ascii charaters: e.g. hebrew letters
thanks

Joseph and Gordon, thank you so much for taking time to try and help me.

Gordon - I am so sorry - you must be so exasperated with me.  I have totally understood about not putting in spaces etc., and spent hours extracting them from all my quizzes.  I simply forgot that they were still in that test folder I made specially to upload to your site last time!  So sorry about that.  In any case, that does not appear to be the problem this time.  I have now uploaded Deborahtest5 to your site and you will see that even with the alterations you recommended (and you have quite a memory to quote all the problems from memory!).  There is still a problem seeing the images in the "Check Answer" and "OK" buttons. ( Please ignore the no_no gif - I have fiddled for an hour and can't work out why it isn't coming out in that test but it appears fine in my non-test quizzes so I am not worried about that).

Joseph confirmed that the images were not displayed with the HP exercise uploaded to Moodle in an Activity in MSIE7 or FF3, using the HP file.

Joseph, to answer your question, the images show up fine on my local computer but are not displayed when I upload to Moodle in IE using the html file.  I have not been able to try using the HP file (that's another problem I am having but forget that) but I do not imagine it would be better on that.

I would be so grateful for your suggestions to solve this.

Thank you so much.

Hi Deborah,
I was afraid there might be something I forgot to tell you ...

You need to add the double quotes back into the <img> tags in the buttons
  • JMatch -> Options -> Configure output -> Buttons

  • Caption for "Check Answer" button
    OLD: <img src=tick.gif alt=tick.gif title=tick width="24" height="24"></img><img src=cross.gif alt=cross.gif title=cross width="24" height="24"></img><img src=question.gif alt=question.gif title=question width="24" height="24"></img>
    NEW: <img src="tick.gif" alt="tick.gif" title="tick" width="24" height="24"></img><img src="cross.gif" alt="cross.gif" title="cross" width="24" height="24"></img><img src="question.gif" alt="question.gif" title="question" width="24" height="24"></img>

  • Caption for "OK" button
    OLD: OK<img src=thumbs_up.gif alt=thumbs_up.gif title=thumbs_up width="25" height="30"></img>בסדר
    NEW: OK<img src="thumbs_up.gif" alt="thumbs_up.gif" title="thumbs_up" width="25" height="30"></img>בסדר
you should be good to go now smile
Gordon
