If I am an admin, how can I hide a module in a course. I do not see the eye icon using which the module can be hidden.

You can turn off modules site wide in your administration block go to activities then manage activities.
If you do not see the eye icon, then I would guess that you need to turn editing on! Little button top right corner of most course themes
