I re-installed the 1.4 and no longer had the issue with the authenticate_user_login. Everything is normal except the moodle home page does not have the left navigation (attached is a graphic of the page) after you login. The only thing showing on the page after the login is the one discussion forum.
Also, I still have the errors I described in my first post with the errors in the last activity box..
