Barcode Scanning for Attendance

Barcode Scanning for Attendance

There are USB barcode readers which work just like a computer's keyboard (the conversion from barcode to ASCII takes place inside the reader). The computer would treat the data as if it were typed in from a computer keyboard.

A feature where students/teachers can scan a barcode which has information like username and password would be really nice. When the student scans their barcode, the attendance module has to check whether they are late/present etc by comparing the current date and time against the scheduled sessions and log the appropriate status automatically. It should be restricted somehow so that students can't scan themselves in from home.

Hi Dmitry,

I'm really excited about your interest in the barcode scanning idea.

Here are a few links about these kind of devices:

Example of a Handheld barcode scanner

USB and Keyboard Wedge Scanners

Keyboard Wedge (What is means)

Just let me know if you need any more info.

Thanks,

Barry

I think this would be GREAT!
I agree it would need to be restricted by IP address.  The Quiz activity can currently do this. My suggestion would be to create an Attendance activity with the IP restriction which only allows the student to access it if they are in the building.  Then have a grade book type of set up which would pull all the events from that course along the top column.  Then each row would pull from the participants.
The student is required to scan their barcode, which records if they are present or late. Then that would populate the 'gradebook'.

Please, someone work on this!
