I was too lazy to read right though these posts (irony anyone смешко ) so I'm sorry if it's been mentioned but I like to point out that the search on the front page of moodle.org is driven by Google so it's great AND it searches the forums and the tracker (at least).

Perhaps the text for each forum could start "save time by searching *here* (link) first".

Sorry Howard, but for the reasons stated in my previous posts on this point I have to disagree with you. By way of example, I searched for term livesearch from the front page of moodle and got nothing, though the term appears in a number of postings over the last 40 days.....

If one were to wish to put something at the start of each forum regarding searching, perhaps it would be a warning not to use the simple search...... but to use the advanced search at
http://moodle.org/mod/forum/search.php?id=5, but then, as you suggest, that only searches forums, and the search facility available for docs is wiki-ish....

Hence my suggestion that we attempt to facilitate access to to appropriate resources via an active lookup

I suspect there's something wrong in google search engine itself.

I could reproduce both searches and a couple of more. For example

http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=98115#p434158 is posted by Marc on Friday, 30 May 2008, 07:16 AM and has line

I have come across some php/ajax that does a live search based on an xml dictionary http://www.w3schools.com/php/php_ajax_livesearch.asp that is I think more along the lines Todd is thinking than the KISS type option I was initially suggesting.

This post is mostly not included to search results. If you test with different browsers or reload the seach page or click the link in

In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 3 already displayed. If you like, you can repeat the search with the omitted results included.

you may get different results every time. I got several times 0 to 9 results for both IE and FF with or without extra search...wink

Interesting - that's not much use is it!!

I find the Google search on the front page my #1 resource for finding stuff, I'll bear that in mind if nothing else.

I don't blame google - it's good but maybe there are just too many www pages to search...

One interesting point is that if you change language results can vary a lot. For example one test in IE

English: 5

http://www.googlesyndicatedsearch.com/u/moodle?q=livesearch&hl=en&domains=moodle.org&sitesearch=moodle.org&ie=UTF-8&filter=0

Russian: 0

http://www.googlesyndicatedsearch.com/u/moodle?q=livesearch&hl=ru&domains=moodle.org&sitesearch=moodle.org&ie=UTF-8&filter=0

Swedish: 10

http://www.googlesyndicatedsearch.com/u/moodle?q=livesearch&hl=sv&domains=moodle.org&sitesearch=moodle.org&ie=UTF-8&filter=0

Finnish: 4

http://www.googlesyndicatedsearch.com/u/moodle?q=livesearch&hl=fi&domains=moodle.org&sitesearch=moodle.org&ie=UTF-8&filter=0

And when you change browser number of results links is of course different...and when you click these links you probably get different results.

I should note here, since Mauno makes the point, that Howard's google search only picks up the times I repeated the term livesearch this weekend, and does not pick up the initial reference, which was only posted some weeks ago....

Not wishing to over-labor the point but, surely, the search would have got you "in the ballpark" and that's good enough?

Hi, I am trying to implement a search field in my Moodle website and I see that at the present there are two options: Global Search which is not very user-friendly and Google search. (Although neither of them could return any results while searching for a word I entered in several places in a course.)

I see that in Moodle.org you are using some kind of customized Google search that doesn't lead you out of the moodle.org site.

¿Could you pass the code for it?

Thanks,

Fabian Glagovsky
