Zip or Unzip a SCORM file?

Zip or Unzip a SCORM file?

Bradley Bailey -
回帖数:14

I've been playing around with loading SCORM files from adobe presenter into Moodle. Somtimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I haven't figured out the proper settings.

But, should I leave a SCORM file zipped after it is uploaded to Moodle? Does leaving the file zipped slow down the system when viewing a presentation?

Hi Bradley,

when you upload a Scorm package to Moodle - it unzips it and stores it in the moddata directory inside your course for display to users.

If you update the zip file (without updating the module itself) and you have set the "autoupdate" field it should automatically rebuild the stored unzipped files based on the setting you have made in the "autoupdate" field.

thanks,

Re: Zip or Unzip a SCORM file?

Thanks for your help...I think I finally figured out my problem. My new SCORM package is large and has audio. It works when I open it in the current window, but often fails to open when I use a new window. I want the presentation to be as large as possible, so I prefer using a new window. Has this issue been fixed or are there any tricks to maximize the screen size when using the current window?

http://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-8631

"Large scorm file with audio stops playing about 15 seconds into it when using IE7 and having the scorm open in new window. It works fine if opened in same window, and works fine if opened in new window with FF or IE6."

Hi Bradley

we can't replicate the issue mentioned in MDL-8631

the display of Scorm objects is going to change a lot - we have a patch in the tracker that has been applied to Moodle 2.0 and should go in 1.9Stable and 1.8stable within the next couple of weeks.

do you have the same issue as mentioned in MDL-8631? - if so can you please provide a scorm object that allows us to replicate the issue?

thanks,

I can send you a copy of my SCORM file if you want. I can also give you access to our website so you can see the issue. How can I send you private info and the SCORM file (about 50mb)?

I am experimenting with a workaround that "might" fix my problem. I figured the system seems overloaded when the presentation first starts playing and locks up. So...I added a blank title slide (without audio) as the first slide in the presentation. So far it is working, but I need to give it a lot more testing before I can claim success.

Thanks - if you gave me access to your course, that would help. - If you gave me teacher access to the course, I could download the scorm object from there so we can try and replicate it. - my e-mail address is listed in my profile.

also - you haven't really said in this forum what your exact issue is - is it the same as MDL-8631 ?

thanks!

Dan,

I sent you a private email with access to the course. Trying to have a blank slide at the beginning didn't keep it from locking up.

The only problem that I've been able to provoke with this, is when the popup blocker interferes with the launching of the SCORM. You need to ensure that the popup blocker permanently lets your site through (temporarily enabling it isn't enough), and then relaunch the object.

The 3 scenarios as I see it are:

(1) SCORM launched in same window - no problem because there is no popup.

(2) SCORM launched in a popup window - big problem if it is trapped by the popup blocker - it kills it dead. Site must be added as an exception and SCORM relaunched.

(3) SCORM in an LMS - this is fine when it is launched as link target to a new window as this isnt treated the same as a JavaScript popup.

Cheers,
Piers Harding.

I am only having this problem with Internet Explorer (version 7). The PopUp blocker doesn't seem to be the issue. I have already disabled the blocker and sometimes the SCORM opens properly for small files without Audio. However, you are probably correct that it is a security setting in Internet Explorer 7 that is causing this problem for the PopUp screens. I have tried many of the security settings with no success.

"(3) SCORM in an LMS - this is fine when it is launched as link target to a new window as this isn't treated the same as a JavaScript popup."

Is there any way to do the above in moodle? I have always been using the open in new window feature and it is treated as a PopUp. The problem with opening in the current window is that a presentation can't use the top part of the screen due to Moodle navigation and Login Info. I would obviously like to have my presentation open as large as possible. The only way I have found to do this is to open in a new window (i.e., PopUp) and press F11.

Sorry - option (3) is a red herring. I thought that it was being triggered off of a link with target='_blank' which is not the case (in the one I just tested from moodle HEAD, where I managed to get it to show the error in FF3).. So it would appear that the only work around for this would be to always open in the current window, thus avoiding the popup, or ensuring that popup blocking is disabled before hand.

There maybe merit in opening up a discussion to allow further customisation of the viewer where by popups can be converted to anchors (<a/> tags with target='_blank') so that this problem can be avoided?

Cheers,
Piers Harding.

Re: Zip or Unzip a SCORM file?

Bradley Bailey -

It would be nice if the SCORM activity could open up a full sized presentation in the current window (without the top part of the screen being filled with navigation and login Info). Then you could simply press F11 to make it full screen.

Like you say….It seems like some browsers have stricter security settings for any window that is treated as a PopUp (even if the Popup blocker is disabled).

Thanks for your input,

Brad

I am still trying to troubleshoot why my SCORM files always open properly in the current window and only sometimes open properly in a new window (using IE7). I am curious why the paths are so much different for getting to the same SCORM file. Are both paths using the same player files?

Path for SCORM file in new window: http://etraining.spiritair.com/inflight/file.php/118/moddata/scorm/173/SCORM.htm

Path for same SCORM file in current window:   http://etraining.spiritair.com/inflight/mod/scorm/player.php?scoid=380&id=385

Hi Bradley,

can you be a bit more specific about how the objects aren't working properly in a new window?

Piers committed some big display patches this week, could you try upgrading to the latest stable version from CVS or - the 1.9Weekly or 1.8Weekly from the download page and see if that fixes your issues?

thanks,

Re: Zip or Unzip a SCORM file?

Bradley Bailey -

I will have to have IT upgrade our system. That might take a while so I will get back to you.

My large SCORM files with audio are locking up when opened in a new window on Internet Explorer 7. They work fine in a current window (but I lose significant screen space). As mentioned earlier...these files work fine when using Firefox-Mozilla.

The interesting thing is that smaller SCORM files of the same type open fine in a new window. I am only having this issue for larger SCORM files opened in a new window. That is the part that is driving me crazy and makes it difficult to troubleshoot browser settings (i.e., the new window sometimes works and sometimes it doesn't)

If I open a file in a current window, then change it to open in a new window, it will open properly on my computer. I am guessing this is because some of the files become cached and this prevents it from locking up when opened in a new window. If I delete the temporary internet files it will lock up.

Thanks smile

Brad
