Job Summary:

Position provides instructional technology support for NMC faculty, staff, and students. This person will develop online instructional modules, support online learning and digital media integration, research and test new technologies, provide training on technology application and use, and provide instructional applications/online learning help desk support. In addition, this position provides user support and operational administration for the online course management system, Moodle. This includes monitoring of the technology help desk online ticketing system. This position may include occasional hours outside of normal business hours. This individual will have the ability to develop a good rapport with faculty, staff, and students; and enjoy working with diverse populations. This person must possess the ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing, have good listening skills, have the ability to understand the needs of others in a patient and caring way, and be flexible and able to deal with interruptions. The ideal candidate will be able to work independently, as well as, collaboratively with others as a team player, be a quick study, and maintain a strong work ethic. The ideal candidate will possess strong trouble shooting ability, be able to diagnose problems, and have a curiosity of, and a strong desire to discover solutions to problems. This individual will enjoy helping people and working with technology.

This NMC position provides Moodle administration and online support.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Technology Consulting and Training

  • Determines training needs and develops plans for prioritization, development, and implementation.
  • Consults with faculty, staff, and students on effective use of a variety of instructional technologies (i.e. online apps, Web 2.0 tools, Microsoft applications, media streaming).
  • Part of team that provides online learning/teaching training (self-directed) for Moodle, in-person, or small group workshops.
  • Assists Media Resources personnel in providing classroom technology training (i.e. clickers)

Technology Help Desk/Moodle Support

  • Member of support team that monitors help desk ticketing system. Periodic online evening and weekend monitoring is expected.
  • Provides phone and drop-in (one-on-one, in person) support.
  • Determines user problems, explores option(s) for resolution, and communicates solutions clearly in a timely manner to those seeking assistance.
  • Verifies student information, following FERPA, through Student Banner access.
  • Provides occasional NMC technology help desk phone backup and special needs support.


Instructional Development Support

  • Develops training and self-help modules, primarily for online delivery through Moodle, based on project needs and resource requirements, as part of a project development team.
  • Works alone or with team (content specialist, instructional designer, and specialists if needed) as appropriate to the project.
  • Performs role of development team leader for projects as assigned; this includes pulling together appropriate personnel and resources to fulfill needs.

  • Works with Director and department staff to support special and innovative projects.


User Support for Online (using Moodle) and Other Flexible Learning Options Programming Support

  • Operational administrator for Moodle and Elluminate online learning system(s); works closely with server and other operational administrators to provide necessary system support and communications.
  • Monitor online Moodle courses activities and provides support to instructors in delivery improvements.
  • Provides database, custom reports, and survey management for online applications.
  • Provides digital media/streaming programming support for online delivery.


Technology Exploration

  • Explores NMC instructional needs for technology.
  • Works with team members to test and develop implementation strategies for new/upgraded technology applications and Moodle upgrades.
  • Shares expertise and technical information with others within NMC and through outreach at conferences, meetings, and seminars.
  • Research opportunities for collaboration and grant funding to help support innovation and reduce NMC costs.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

None.

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in instructional technology, education, or related field.
  • Three years of related experience (e.g. in educational technology, computer technology, technology training).
  • Basic experience using HTML code.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office or equivalent applications (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel).
  • Experience problem solving or trouble shooting technology issues/problems.
  • Online learning experience or experience working in a course or content management system.
  • Valid, unrestricted Michigan driver’s license (or ability to obtain by start date)

Preferred:

  • Experience with database programming in Microsoft Access and/or MySQL.
  • Experience with programming languages such as XML, XSLT, Javascript, Java, php, and/or Visual Basic.
  • Experience with digital media, visual design, Flash, and/or photography.
  • Teaching/training experience, preferably in online or hybrid/blended delivery modalities.

Work Hours:

This is a full-time, 12-month, salaried position, which may include occasional hours outside of normal business hours.
