We are looking for software developers to join our team that
develops and supports the in-house, open source and commercial systems
that thousands of Open University students use every day to study
everything from astrophysics to nursing to fine art. The Open University
has always used the latest technologies to give our distance students
the best possible learning experiences wherever they happen to be
studying, and that is never more true than today. Thus we constantly
balance good engineering (security, robustness and performance) with the
ability to innovate (working in an agile team, user experience,
collaborating with non-technical product owners, DevOps and awareness of
pedagogy).
A range of technical and general software engineering skills
are desirable, but key is developing PHP applications with PostgresSQL
(LAMP) and for the Moodle open source learning management system.
Naturally this also requires knowledge of web development (HTML, XML,
CSS, JavaScript), frameworks (jQuery, Angular, etc.) and
service-oriented architecture. Experience of developing, deploying and
operationally managing applications in the cloud, especially Microsoft
Azure, would be beneficial, as would previous experience with
educational technologies.
IT is a great department to work in with the opportunity to get
involved in shaping the future of the University’s systems, whilst
developing and enhancing your skills, enabling you to move towards your
career aspirations. Perks of working at the Open University include; A
good holiday package, a pension scheme, training, and an environment
that fosters life-long learning to ensure all staff achieve their
personal and professional potential and feel satisfied at the end of
each day.
