What spec server

What spec server

I have searched through the forums and now feel as lost as ever  sad

I am looking for hosting either managed or unmanaged for a moodle installation with capability for 2530 potential browsers and upto 500 concurrent users (MAX)

Would prefer this on windows server in case the company I work for eventually get their own servers (Which will probably be windows)

Can anyone please suggest a specification that I should go for (i.e. Ram, processors, sofware, disk space, etc.) and maybe even a good company to do the hosting.

Many thank in advance  smile

Moodle is a server component which is based on open standards. Therefore moving a "Unix-Moodle" installation to a Windows server, and vice versa, is not problem at all.

The point is, for you current need, you can condider _any_ server plattform without worrying that the installation may be one day shifted to a Windows server. That way you keep your options open.

To get a rough idea what 2530 users and 500 concurrent users could mean, you can go through older discussions in this forum. For example, here some recent ones:

http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=38448
http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=60271

My guess from those discussions is that, Unix/Linux servers are more efficient than the Windows servers. In other words, the plattform _does_ affect what hardware you ultimately need.
