Just got another message from a friend 'in transition' who is trying to get out form under the weight of blackweb (blackboard/webct) (they are being asked to upgrade to enterprise). Her IT head claimed that their school (5000 people including staff) was too large for an open source solution... I'm getting very tired of this. I suggest
1. that we get a chart together with large schools that have adopted (send in the info, i'll make the chart) When i say 'athabasca and NZLV' i hear 'oh yeah, but how much do they spend on implementation?' a nice long list would solve this problem.
2. we somehow get a third party to review this information and post it somewhere other than here (people get susupicious when i send them to 'moodle.org' for information about moodle.)
3. we make this part of the large 'moodle transition package' that we can send to people when they are trying to make a pitch for moodle. (again, send info, i'll package and repost)
cheers.
dave.
We are a 5000 people school, one server, 9 locations and using Moodle for almost three years now: https://studiewijzerplus.nl
Every schoolyear we start again with counting the number of users and the automatic counter (thanks Penny!) is now pointing at 3103

I've have also heard this kind of comment in a presentation on e-learning by an "e-learning expert" in higher education. He dismissed "free software" (obviously including Moodle) as something only viable for a faculty member to set up by themselves, and went on to explain that if you want something to scale for use university-wide you need a commercial or proprietary system. Of course this is nothing but blatant FUD, but we really need resources on Moodle.org to show what kind of schools are using Moodle, and size of some of the larger installations.
What are some of the larger Moodle installations around the world?

Luther College, Decorah, IA, USA
6,000+
300 courses this term (FALL-2005)
Using Moodle on single-server for 1-1/2 years
We just discovered we only had 512 MB RAM installed, never even suspected because performance never suffered.

Hi Bob- Could you characterize the actual usage?
Number of hits, that's a very gross measure.
A profile of hits per tool/feature would be better,
things you can see in the Logs.
Also, could you say a bit more about the actual server you are using.

Hello again,
Thanks for the responses. I've started a wiki in the developers forum. (hope the mods don't mind)
http://moodle.org/mod/wiki/view.php?id=2935&page=Moodle+Advocacy
Please go ahead and add at will. I'll go over and format if necessary...

Hi Dave,
Instead of using the developer wiki, may I encourage you to use MoodleDocs Large Moodle installations listing.

Great!
Thanks Helen. I've moved the first few tidbits over there. So people can either go directly to that page http://docs.moodle.org/wiki/Large_installations or just post here and i'll put it there later
cheers,
dave.

nor the other one seem to go to Large Installations... Anybody have an idea as to where this ... page might be?
We're getting ready to do a presentation to a state-wide school system of some 6,000 students (high school level). Hope it works out!
Have a great afternoon!

The links have changed. You can go here http://docs.moodle.org/en/Large_installations to get to this information. BTW, this doc was extremely helpful to prove to my management that Moodle would scale to our needs.

Thanks, Scott! i also found it later on as i continued to browse the site. i noticed that in a PowerPoint presentation that in 2004 it listed about 1,100 sites...
now this page http://moodle.org/sites/ lists over 38,800 sites and 199 countries! Wow! That just blows my socks off!
Have a great evening!
